Episode 511: Big Bang X Infinite Challenge & Santa Academy III: December 17, 2016
There are only two weeks left in 2016. Yoo Jae-suk shakes Park Myung-soo’s hand and tells him he’s done a good job working hard up until now. Park Myung-soo asks if he’s getting dismissed. He’s made this same joke several times on the show already, but this time it’s rather sad because of Yoo Jae-suk’s other show, <Running Man> which fired a couple of its cast members without proper notice.
All the MCs are dressed up today, but as usual, each of the MCs think the others look funny. Yang Se-hyung calls Yoo Jae-suk’s outfit the “half-dried herring” look. He’s wearing black and red, which looks like seaweed, gochujang, and herring.
Yoo Jae-suk gets his revenge by making fun of Yang Se-hyung’s stylist who he claims doesn’t really know what she’s doing. Yang Se-hyung sarcastically adds that his stylist is very hardworking. She picked all of the trendiest things for him to wear today. His jacket, in particular, is so new that it’s shedding more than his dogs Oakie and Dokie.
Jeong Jun-ha is dressed like he works for a funeral home. Park Myung-soo too.
After all that friendly banter, Yang Se-hyung conceeds that the MCs have at least beat “them” in terms of style. Park Myung-soo says they look like they’re trying to hard. Who are they referring to?
Today’s guests are B-I-G B-A-N-G!!!
I was a huge fan of Big Bang during their “Lies” and “Haru Haru” days, and loved when Infinite Challenge used to parody those music videos. Apparently, Big Bang just came out with their third full length album which has topped the charts in 19 countries.
It’s been five years since they guested on the show as a group back during the 2011 “Gangs of Seoul” Special , and ten years since their debut.
Park Myung-soo points out that they’ve definitely beat Daesung in terms of looks. Yoo Jae-suk jokes that Daesung is unusually tall today. He must have added some insoles in his shoes. Daesung explains, “Men usually keep growing until they go to the army.” Seungri jokes that Daesung’s nose has grown too. Haha asks if Daesung has finished getting his hair done. It looks like mess, but Daesung proudly claims that it’s the Doctor Strange look.
G-Dragon just came home from Paris, so he’s got fashion on his mind. He calls Jeong Jun-ha out for dressing like a bodyguard.
It seems like the Big Bang members aren’t going to take the disses quietly. Seungri has some words for Haha who looks like he just came from watching a 3-D movie.
Haha is known for copying G-Dragon and TOP’s fashion. He’s even wearing a hat that GD gifted him, but G-Dragon told Taeyang backstage that Haha’s hat is a fake. LOL. How embarrassing for Haha who hadn’t known until now.
It’s time for Introductions~
G-Dragon introduces himself as Director Kwon (from the Infinite Company Special.)
T.O.P. says his eyebrows are natural. On the other hand, Yang Se-hyung recently got his eyebrows tattooed. That means that 50% of Infinite Challenge MCs now have eyebrow tattoos. (Yang Se-hyung, Jeong Jun-ha, and Hwang Kwang-hee.) I actually really dislike this trend of thick, dark eyebrows. It’s too overpowering.
Taeyang mentions his invitation to the Idiot’s War special. He really wanted to go to prove he’s not dumb after getting the Eiffel Tower and the Leaning Tower of Pisa confused during the music festival special.
Daesung tries to copy G-Dragon’s hand symbol during his intro. Seungri does his hand gesture from “Strong Baby.”
Yoo Jae-suk reminds them of the heart symbol with crossed fingers that G-Dragon and Yang Se-hyung both claim they started doing before it became a thing. Yang Se-hyung and G-Dragon were both born on August 18th although Yang Se-hyung was born in 1985 and G-Dragon was born in 1988. They also look alike.
Infinite Challenge 10 x 10 Big Bang Q&A
2016 is the ten year anniversary for both groups. Infinite Challenge debuted in May 2006 while Big Bang’s was in August 2006.
T.O.P says the secret to their longevity is that they are kind to each other.
“Child reporter” Yang Se-hyung asks, “A lot of idol groups break up easily these days, what do you think kept you together past the seven year jinx?”
Taeyang admits that after about seven years, there was some conflict due to grudges adding up. Daesung says that their secret is that they make a lot of money for it to be worth it. Also, they went on a world tour, so they couldn’t afford to be upset with each other.
Seungri, “It’s because of our leader.”
G-Dragon compares himself to Yoo Jae-suk’s role in <Infinite Challenge.>
Yoo Jae-suk, “But isn’t T.O.P. older than you?
G-Dragon replies, “So what? Park Myung-soo is older than you!”
Child reporter Yang Se-hyung’s second question is “It’s been 1 year and 4 months since you’ve released a song and 8 years since the last full album. Why are the names of their latest singles so strange?” The songs he mentions are “Fxxk It” and “‘Last Dance.”
Taeyang says they ran out of ideas, so they went with”Fxxk It” as the theme of their album.
He also teases that Hwang Kwang-hee often told him that he could have done a better job than Seungri as a Big Bang member.
Seungri asks Hwang Kwang-hee, “Uh . . . what team are you from again?”
Hwang Kwang-hee, “ZE:A!!!” I actually had to think about the answer to this.
Haha says that he could have taken over Daesung’s place.
Yang Se-hyung chooses GD since they look alike.
Park Myung-soo chooses Daesung too.
Yoo Jae-suk adds that after Daesung debuted with Big Bang, the number of idol applicants doubled. He’s the icon of hope.
Jeong Jun-ha says that when he lost 30 kgs, he looked like T.O.P.
Yoo Jae-suk also chooses T.O.P. since he sounds kind of like him and even parodied his songs.
Yoo Jae-suk changes things up and asks the Big Bang members who they think they could beat in <Infinite Challenge>.
Seungri chooses Hwang Kwang-hee.
Daesung, “Hwang Kwang-hee and Park Myung-soo are a given, but I could beat Haha too.”
Taeyang wants Park Myung-soo’s position. “He doesn’t really do anything so it’d be easy.”
There’s a dance battle between Seungri and Hwang Kwang-hee. He says their management companies used to be near each other, so he’d often see Seungri on the streets dancing and singing on the way to work.
Hwang Kwang-hee’s dancing looks like he’s wearing a straight jacket but has ants in his pants. Seungri tries to break dance, but fails. He can barely get his legs up in the air. Yoo Jae-suk calls him out on his terrible dancing skills, “What happened to you Seungri?” Hwang Kwang-hee wants to dance to “Bang Bang Bang.” Daesung responds with a dance next.
Next, Hwang Kwang-hee goes for Taeyang. They dance off to “Fxxk It.” It seems like no one’s really taking this battle seriously. It’s just a bunch of silly dances, which is fine too.
For his next opponent, Hwang Kwang-hee puts on a green net to mimic G-Dragon’s green hair. “Fantastic Baby.”
Then, Hwang Kwang-hee puts on a red net to copy T.O.P.’s hairstyle. They dance to “Bae Bae.” Instead of dancing, T.O.P. just pushes Hwang Kwang-hee out of the camera frame.
Hwang Kwang-hee wins! I’m really glad that Hwang Kwang-hee got a chance to shine for once. He’s pretty good with idol guests.
Yang Se-hyung also shows off a G-Dragon dance impersonation from “Good Boy.” The Big Bang members are impressed.
Yoo Jae-suk asks the Big Bang members about Director Kwon’s (G-Dragon) acting in <Infinite Company.> They watch a few clips, and G-Dragon screams out in embarrassment. I actually thought he was decent for a non-actor. He probably had a lot of practice through his music video shoots.
We also see a few more clips of the Big Bang members as actors. Taeyang was in <Besame Mucho> (2001) when he was 14 years old. The MCs joke that he was a scene stealer. G-Dragon was also an extra in the film <Taebaek Mountain Range> when he was seven years old.
Yoo Jae-suk asks the other Big Bang members to try acting out a scene from <Infinite Company>. Yoo Jae-suk hands them the script that G-Dragon had.
Seungri’s busy translating the script into four languages. He speaks Japanese, Chinese, and English.
Taeyang does the scene where he finds out that someone’s skimming the company profits. His vocal tone sounds like a mosquito. Park Myung-soo, “Please blow your nose before you act.”
Daesung tries the same scene. He makes a funny face.
Seungri’s doing the plane ticket scene with Yang Se-hyung as his scene partner. He’s decent. The Japanese version sounds decent. For the Chinese version, Yang Se-hyung just makes random sounds since he doesn’t speak the language. English version: Seungri, “I need business.” Yang Se-hyung, “We have little money. You can economy.” LOL!
Infinite Challenge x Big Bang Honest Talk
In this segment, Yoo Jae-suk asks a bunch of questions where the Infinite Challenge and Big Bang members push a button if its true, but first, Park Myung-soo goes to the bathroom.
Question 1: Without me, Big Bang / Infinite Challenge couldn’t function.
Six people push the button, including Park Myung-soo since the other members push his button for him.
When Park Myung-soo returns, he doesn’t miss a beat and calls himself the motor of “Infinite Challenge.”
T.O.P. says he pushed the button because he wished it were true.
Seungri surprisingly didn’t push the button.
Question 2: There’s a member who would have a hard time without Big Bang. Three people push the button.
Seungri chose Daesung. If it weren’t for Big Bang there would be no place for him to show off his talents.
Question 3: This one is for the Big Bang members only. There is a complaint that I haven’t been able to tell the other members during the past ten years.
Seungri says that as the youngest there are a lot of things he can’t say. For example, G-Dragon, T.O.P., and Taeyang get a lot of sponsored clothes, but all he gets are neckties. Daesung, “You’ve got it good. I only get shoelaces.” Aw.
The MCs ask G-Dragon about fashion shows and sponsorships. He says if he gets invited, the costs are paid for. They’re all jealous. Yang Se-hyung asks him if he can get some freebies since G-Dragon has so many clothes. They exchange jackets to see if Yang Se-hyung would look good with some of G-Dragon’s sponsored clothes. He looks like a taxi driver from the 1970s.
Question 4: This time, the Infinite Challenge MCs get asked, there is a complaint that I haven’t been able to tell the other members for the past ten years. Five people. It’s everyone except Yoo Jae-suk.
Park Myung-soo is still grumpy about not being the main character in any of the calendar photo shoots.
Jeong Jun-ha is mad about the polar bear special. He says that Yang Se-hyung and Haha didn’t appreciate the hard work he did for it, so he sent them text messages to complain. Yang Se-hyunh apologizes. He says he just made fun of Jeong Jun-ha because people reacted well whenever he did so.
Hwang Kwang-hee, “How come you’re only mad at them? Be mad at me too. I want to be included.”
Yang Se-hyung says he feels uncomfortable about Kwang-hee treating others so well even though he’s younger. It makes him feel guilty.
Yoo Jae-suk says he doesn’t have to worry for long because it’s almost time for him to do his military service. T.O.P. and Hwang Kwang-hee both do military salute. Time’s ticking for the both of them.
Question 5: If I’m born again, I want to be a Big Bang member. All five members push the button.
Seungri, “I know that I’m the least talented of the group, so I’m always grateful to Big Bang.”
And that’s it for Big Bang (until the part two next week). I’m a little disappointed by how lacking in imagination this episode was. I wish they did something more active that a Q&A session in a studio, but I guess now that they’re such big stars, they don’t have enough time for something like “Gangs of Seoul.”
Santa Academy III
The past two episodes were about picking the best Santa intern. Yoo Jae-suk won the game last week, so he gets to be Santa while everyone else is a reindeer. The MCs meet up at a coffee shop to discuss how they’ll deliver the presents that they’ve acquired during the Santa Academy II episode last week.
Santa Jae-suk eats cake and coffee, and teases the others who can’t have any because it’s for humans only.
Park Myung-soo complains about not wanting to wear the red poof ball for a nose. He keep taking off his nose, but Yoo Jae-suk chastises him. He needs to be a good Rudolph .
Yoo Jae-suk also asks them to talk about he “kind” things they did this year.
Yang Se-hyung found a letter in his mailbox from an elementary student asking for an interview for a school assignment. He let him interview him for 30 minutes.
When Jeong Jun-ha and his wife were shopping for groceries, a kid kept following him around. Jun-ha thought he wanted to take a picture, but instead he asked for 10,000 won, so he gave it to him. Yang Se-hyung jokes that he got scammed by a kid.
Yoo Jae-suk donated so much money that I can’t even keep track of where. There are a bunch of places listed on the screen.
Park Myung-soo got rear ended by a taxi driver, but paid for it anyways. He said he was really mad, but there was a black box and two women in their 20s sitting in the back of the taxi, so he couldn’t really yell or get mad at the driver. He also donated to a charity that helps deaf children called Eardrums of Love.
Skull and Haha donated some money.
Hwang Kwang-hee donated too.
Now, it’s time to talk about the presents. Some of the gifts that the MCs acquired during the Santa Academy special last week include a washing machine, AC, fridge, laptop, computer, and drone. Yoo Jae-suk says they can’t give present to crying children or if they get caught. That’s part of Santa’s code. This segment will be modeled after the now defunct show <Let’s Praise Them> which was hosted by Kim Gook-jin and Kim Yong-man back in 1998.
Last week, the MCs asked people to post stories on their websites to nominate people who deserve presents. Some of them include
- An elementary student who protested against laying off security guards in his apartment
- A teenager who rescued a family that was stuck in their home during an apartment fire
- A man who gathered help when a school bus slid in the rain and fell over inside a tunnel
- A man who manages a fridge full of food open to anyone who needs it.
- A motorcycle driver who helped an ambulance get through traffic when cars wouldn’t move out of the way for a 28 week pregnant women needing immediate medical attention
- A poor woman who saved up 4 million won from her welfare benefits to donate to needy children.
Before they meet again to deliver presents, Yoo Jae-suk asks his reindeer if there is anything they need. Yang Se-hyung asks for a nose upgrade. Park Myung-soo wants better gloves since they can barely control their fingers. Jeong Jun-ha wants holes in the pants so they can use the bathroom more easily. Park Myung-soo asks for detachable antlers as well.
Next Week: The presents get delivered
