Infinite Challenge Recap: Episode 515
Episode 515: Your Name Is Special – Part One: January 14, 2016
This is the first <Infinite Challenge> filming to take place in the new year. Yoo Jae-suk asks his fellow cast members for their 2017 plans.
Jeong Jun-ha replies, “Since I have more missions this year, I’ll have to do my best.” Park Myung-soo says, “Can’t you keep that to yourself out of respect for those who don’t have work.” Aw poor Myung-soo. At least he has his radio show. Haha says, “You have to take care of yourself if you want the Daesang.” Yang Se-hyun and Haha then suddenly chant, “Team Jeong Jun-ha! Fighting!!!” Since when were these two so nice to Jeong Jun-ha? Maybe they really did feel bad about picking on him all of last year.
Haha says he quit smoking, so that he can be more active on <Infinite Challenge>. It’s been five days since he’s smoked. Park Myung-soo gave him an e-cigarette as encouragement.
The PD then talks about today’s mission. During a recent filming, Yang Se-hyung mentioned how there are still a lot of people who don’t know who he is. Everyone probably knows who Yoo Jae-suk is though. Most people know of Park Myung-soo, but quite a few don’t know his name. Jeon Jun-ha adds that he often gets called “Jung Jun-ho.” (There’s a famous actor with that name).
This conversation sparked today’s mission, “Do you know me?” The MCs will walk all around Korea, until they find someone who doesn’t know who they are. Once they find someone who doesn’t know their name, they can go straight home and end work for the day.
Each MC will have a partner to help them with the mission. They need to talk to those who are at least five years old. If they find someone who’s on the fence, they will have the chance to show off their talents or skills, and use multiple choice to get that person to guess his name.
Today’s episode will feature just three of the six MCs.
- Yoo Jae-suk – 27 years since he debuted, 14 Daesangs, National MC
- Haha – 17 years since he debuted, singing, acting, MC, an all around entertainer
- Hwang Kwang-hee – 8 years since he debuted, a familiarity than spans generations, variety idol
Yoo Jae-suk is worried that Hwang Kwang-hee is going to find someone right outside his home, and will barely get any screen time. Yoo Jae-suk might have to go all the way to the “end of the world village” which is the nickname for Haenam County located in the very southernmost tip of the Korean peninsula. They decide not to wear any masks, funny outfits, or costumes. They’ll just dress how they usually do for <Infinite Challenge> filming.
The mission starts.
It’s 9 AM. Yoo Jae-suk walks out of his house. He’s wearing a coat, dressed to look like Gong Yoo from <The Lonely Shining Goblin>. I thought they agreed on no funny costumes? A voice narrates, “Only the goblin’s bride can pull out his sword, the one who doesn’t know his name.” We don’t see a sword stuck in his chest though. Jae-suk says it’s because we know who he is. Only those who don’t know him can see it, just like in <The Lonely Shining Goblin> . . . well kind of.
Since each MC gets a partner to help him, Yoo Jae-suk calls Kim Jong-min offering him to buy him some delicious food. The <The Lonely Shining Goblin> theme song plays as Yoo Jae-suk drives to Kim Jong-min’s place. This song is on almost every variety shows these days. It’s stuck in my head. He meets with Jong-min and asks if he can see anything stuck in his chest. Nope.
Yoo Jae-suk notes that Kim Jong-min has to be his Lee Dong-wook. Yoo Jae-suk wanted Jong-min to be his partner because he’s traveled all around the country due to <1 Night 2 Days>. He wants to find someplace without a lot of TVs. Kim Jong-min says it’s possible to find a place without TVs, but the people there will still know him.
They get in the car and Yoo Jae-suk drives them around. They need to find someone who hasn’t watched TV for 20 years because Yoo Jae-suk’s been famous since 1998. Kim Jong-min says they need to find someone who was in his/her 80s back then, so that person would be in the 100s now. They stop by a rest stop for some ramen and pork cutlet. As soon as they walk in the food court, everyone’s like, “Daebak!” Everyone’s busy taking photos with their phones.
There’s one guy who doesn’t seem to care for them, and just quietly eats his food, so Yoo Jae-suk decides to go talk to him, hoping he doesn’t recognize him.
Yoo Jae-suk asks, “You don’t know me, do you?” The man replies, “Of course i do. I saw you a lot on TV. You got the Daesang.” Mission fail. They go back to eating, and try to reenact an eating scene from the drama.
We go back to 9 AM. This time it’s Haha’s turn. He walks outside his apartment and brags about how famous he is. He says hello to random people on the street, but everyone just walks by him. He gets in his car to meet up with a “hyung.” He calls him and finds out that he’s at the barber shop.
It’s actor Choi Min-young wearing black leather pants and sipping on some takeout coffee. There were both in the legendary sitcom <Nonstop> together. He says he didn’t even put on any makeup. Haha, “I can’t even see your pores with how much makeup you’ve caked on.” Choi Min-young, “It’s just BB Cream!” Choi Min-young wants to do the <Infinite Challenge> hand gesture. Haha says it’s not necessary, but then gives in.
Choi Min-young’s super conscious of the cameras. He wants to look good as he hasn’t been on TV much for the past ten years. They drive by the ritzy Apgugeong District and talk about their youth hanging out in nightclubs. They reminisce on their past and Choi Min-young talks about how much fun they had on the set of <Nonstop> They even met Wesley Snipes. Choi Min-young, “Yeah he married a Korean woman.” Haha, “Are you talking about Nicolas Cage?” Choi Min-young, “Yeah, I get them confused because they look the same?” Haha, “Huh?!”
They decide to get some brunch first.
It’s 10 AM and Hwang Kwang-hee goes to pick up Jo Kwon. Hwang Kwang-hee says he wanted Jo Kwon because they have similar images. Two weeks ago, he went to buy some used clothes, and the owner kept giving him discounts because he thought he was Kkap Kwon.
The two of them haven’t been on a lot of varieties together though. Hwang Kwang-hee says when he first debuted, he wanted to get to Jo Kwon’s level but he couldn’t beat him in dance, so he tried talk instead. That’s why he admitted to having plastic surgery. He needed something sensational to talk about.
Jo Kwon says that a lot of older people don’t know his name. They just call him Kkap kwon or Jo kkap. He’s also known for looking like actress Choi Ji-woo. Hwang Kwang-hee says he often gets told that he resembles Im Seulong. Jo Kwon, “Yeah, he really hated hearing that.” Hwang Kwang-hee says that the two are good friends now though.
During the drive to their next location, Jo Kwon talks about how he originally wanted to be in 2 PM. Hwang Kwang-hee says it’s better to divide income four ways than six. In his next life, he wants to be a solo singer.
Meanwhile, Kim Jong-min recommends going to Yeonpo Village where they shot the “Teacher Kim Bong-du Special” for <1 Night 2 Days>. As they pass by a toll booth, Yoo Jae-suk asks the toll booth employee if she can she his sword. Of course she can’t.
Choi Min-young and Haha are having breakfast. Choi Min-young complains of how he used to always buy Haha food. Choi Min-young then starts talking to the camera crew like they’re audience members. He’s not used to this kind of variety show.
Choi Min-young recommends going to the driver restaurants in Yeonnam District because truck drivers are too busy to watch TV. As they walk out of the restaurant, the valet driver recognizes Choi Min-young over Haha, Choi Min-young tells the cameraman to film this. Another fan comes up to Choi Min-young. It’s been ten years since he’s been active on TV, and people like him more than Haha. Choi Min-young says they should change the title of the segment.
Choi Min-young starts grabbing random people and asking if they know Haha. Of course they all do. He blows a kiss at some fans. Haha is embarrassed. Choi Min-young looks at the cameras again to see if his hair is okay. Haha complains that he came on the show to promote himself and not to help him with his mission. They get back in the car and head to Yeonnam District.
Hwang Kwang-hee decides to head towards a pre-school as a test run. Jo Kwon says he’s not on TV much these days, so he’s a bit worried. They see a few elementary kids. They ask if they know him. They know him, but say they don’t know his name, “Kwang kyu? Kwang-hee? Hwang Kwang-hee?” Ok, so they do know his name. On to the next person.
Yoo Jae-suk says if they can’t find anyone that doesn’t know him, they might have to keep filming the next day too. Kim Jong-min has a few recommendations for replacement helpers. Puhaha. They start heading to a rural area, and the road starts to get pretty broken down. It curves back and forth. It looks like they’re in the middle of a mountain. Yoo Jae-suk stops a random motorcycle driver. He knows Yoo Jae-suk but can’t remember his name. Maybe they’ve found the right guy. It’s time to break out the multiple choice question. Is his name . . .
- Kim Bong-du
- Lee Sang-chul
- Yoo Sang-yoon
- Yoo Jae-suk
The motorcycle drive correctly guesses number four. They get back in the car and Yoo Jae-suk says they’ve really succeeded in life to be doing this kind of mission. He recalls his rookie years where no one knew who he was.
They then stop by a river to look at the view. It’s beautiful, but Kim Jong-min just complains, “There are no people here.” He just wants to hurry up.
Haha goes back to Yeonnam District in his hometown of Mapo District. Haha brags about everyone knowing him there. Before they even head towards the driver restaurants, they stop a random old person on the street. Choi Min-young asks him if he’s ever seen Haha on TV. He shakes his head no. Haha does the <Infinite Challenge> hand gesture. It’s still no. Choi Min-young asks if he knows celebrities like Yoo Jae-suk or Kang Ho-dong. He does. When asked who he thinks Haha is, he guesses that he’s some theater actor. Hahaha. Basically, theater actors are like the unknown version of movie actors. Well that’s a wrap for Haha.
Before they leave, Haha asks him if he knows who Choi Min-young. He says he looks familiar, like one of those actors who’s famous in China. He thinks he saw him on the plane during an inflight movie. Haha realizes that he’s talking about actor Choi Seong-guk.
The mission is over. Haha is embarrassed. He wanted to go to the mountains or oceans. How could he have found someone in the middle of busy Seoul? Choi Min-young yells at the passerbys that he’s dongsaeng’s name is Haha and tries to encourage him.
Yoo Jae-suk stops by a rural restaurant. A couple comes out of a truck, and they smile as they see Yoo Jae-suk. They know him all too well. Yoo Jae-suk asks if there’s someone in the neighborhood who wouldn’t know him, but they don’t think there is. He’s driven three hours, there must be someone here.
Next, they try a random house. The woman there recognizes him but can’t think of his name. He puts on a grasshopper hat that he used during his rookie days, and the woman thinks he’s talking about “Big eyes?” She has no idea about the grasshopper. Hopeful, Yoo Jae-suk starts the multiple choice, but then the woman remembers his name, it’s Yoo Jae-suk.
Yoo Jae-suk and Kim Jong-min drive some more until they reach a road that doesn’t show up on the GPS. They think TVs wouldn’t work there, so this place is a good bet. They’re arrive at the end of the road, where they need to take a boat.
Hwang Kwang-hee and Jo Kwon arrive at a used clothes market in Ilsan. The young salesmen there all know him. Kwang-hee is happy, because he thought his segment would end early. They then head towards a factory and finds an older man and asks who he thinks he is. The man answers that he saw him on Running Man???
It’s multiple choice time. Is his name . . . ?
- Ji Jin-hee
- Kim Young-hee
- Nam Chang-hee
- Hwang Kwang-hee
- Hwang Hyun-hee
He guesses number five. The end.
Yoo Jae-suk is the only one of the three left. Of course he’s the most famous. He and Kim Jong-min take the boat across and head towards a rural house. No one’s home. They try another house. There are no people here, just dogs that follow them around. They decide to take the boat back and head to a different location. Bye bye doggies!
Back in the car. It’s now been six hours since they started. They arrive at a local community center. The grandmas and grandpas there are excited to see him. They ask if there’s anyone who wouldn’t know Yoo Jae-suk. There’s one grandma nearby who only watches KBS1 which doesn’t air any variety shows. KBS2 is the one that airs variety shows while KBS1 focuses more on dramas, lifestyle, and documentaries.
The two drive to the grandma’s house Yoo Jae-suk gets down on his knees and asks the 91 year old grandma if she’s seen him before, Grandma, “I don’t know. You’re on TV? I think I’ve seen that man.” *points to Kim Jong-min*
Jae-suk takes out his grasshopper hand and does a silly dance. She says she watches TV all day but she has no idea who Yoo Jae-suk is. They turn on the TV, and Yoo Jae-suk flips through the channels, trying to find himself. The grandma keeps saying she’s seen Kim Jong-min. He looks like a nice guy while she thinks Yoo Jae-suk doesn’t look so kind. There isn’t a single channel with Yoo Jae-suk on. That’s strange.
Yoo Jae-suk’s finally done with his mission and says he’d like to say goodbye. Grandma, “I don’t even know you, why are you trying to say goodbye.” Yoo Jae-suk replies, “Even though this is my first time seeing you, have a good new year.” *bows*
He asks the grandma to pull out his sword from his chest. The grandma stares at him strangely, but goes along with his pretend game. Yoo Jae-suk, “I’ll try harder, so you will know me.” She asks for a picture so she can remember. Jae-suk asks for her cell phone so they can take a selfie, but she only has a landline. LOL. One of the staff members takes a picture for her.
Yoo Jae-suk walks out telling Kim Jong-min, “You are the true Daesang winner.” Kim Jong-min is all smiles. The two head their separate ways.
A few days later, the grandma blows out a candle as a nod to <The Lonely, Shining Goblin>, and Yoo Jae-suk returns as they watch <Infinite Challenge> together.
Next Week: Jeong Jun-ha, Park Myung-soo and Yang Se-hyung’s segments.
