Episode 326: Rice Thief Race: November 20, 2016
Today’s mission takes place in the city of Icheon, which is about an hour away from Seoul and known for its ceramics and rice. The Running Man crew minus Song Ji-hyo is waiting for today’s guests. They’re all wearing thick white jackets. It’s definitely gotten cold lately.
The guests are first generation idols Sechs Kies (Eun Jiwon, Lee Jaijin, Kim Jaeduck, Kang Sunghoon, and Jang Suwon). The Running Man MCs find them posing like one of their cheesy old-school posters.
Today will be Sechs Kies vs Running Man, and there are “lady” team captains in charge of each team. (*Note: The Korean word used for “lady” is the kind that refers to ladies of noble birth.) Two women walk up with hanbok skirts covering their faces, as noble ladies usually did when walking in public for modesty reasons.
The Running Man crew knows right away that it’s Song Ji-hyo under there. She’s in charge of the Sechs Kies team while the Running Man team leader is actress Hwang Woo-seul-hye who gets made fun of for her overly curled bangs.
Game Rules: The Lady and Her Servants: Catch the Rice Thief
Today’s mission is titled “The Lady and her Servants: Catch the Rice Thief.” Among the ten servants (male players), there is one rice thief. (*Note: the concept of rice thief refers to a side dish that is so delicious (and usually salty as well) that it makes people eat a lot of rice with it.)
Yoo Jae-suk grabs Lee Kwang-soo’s collar, accusing him of being the thief.
PD, “We haven’t chosen the rice thief yet.”
Lee Kwang-soo yells back at Yoo Jae-suk, “THEY HAVEN’T CHOSEN THE RICE THIEF YET!!!” The poor giraffe is alway being bullied.
The rice thief has a hidden mission. Meanwhile, the two teams will go through three rounds of games. The team with the rice thief on their team at the end of the three rounds loses. Every time a team wins a round, the “lady” (team captain) will get a hint regarding the rice thief and a chance to exchange servants.
The PD points them towards a gazebo where there are ten hot stone pots. Nine of them contain rice while one contains raw crabs marinated in soy sauce. It’s a side dish that’s often referred to as a rice thief. The rice thief’s mission is to accrue 100 straw bags of rice by doing various missions. If he succeeds, they will be donated in his name. If he fails, he will get a flogging as punishment.
The “servants” (male players) walk over one by one to the gazebo to find their fate. We don’t know who the rice thief is yet.
Lee Kwang-soo takes an extraordinary long amount of time and the MCs again accuse him of being the rice thief. Lee Kwang-soo defends himself saying it’s because the staff members had to set up the cameras.
Hwang Woo-seul-hye randomly accuses Haha of being the thief. Yoo Jae-suk, “I’ve filmed with Hwang Woo-seul-hye a few times before, and she’s a very innocent person.” Innocent in this case is a euphemism for dumb. Hwang Woo-seul-hye just laughs. Aw.
Kim Jong-kook asks Eun Jiwon what he had inside his stone pot, When he doesn’t respond, Kim Jong-kook is sure it’s him, but Haha responds that Eun Jiwon is the type to pretend like he’s the “X-man” when he’s not.
Hwang Woo-seul-hye says she has a Sechs Kies dance prepared. She dances to “Road Fighter” and “Couple.” She looks kinda silly, like a female Shim Hyung-tak, but you can tell she’s really trying hard, and she’s pretty to boot, so everyone cheers her on.
Round One: Crystal Ball Mini-games
For the first round, the teams will be playing various mini-games. The team to win best two out of three wins round one. There are six mini-games prepared with a crystal ball labelled with different Sechs Kies songs as hints to the mini-game.
The choices are
- “School Song”
- “Pom Saeng Pom Sa”
- “Road Fighter”
- “Three Words”
The first mini-game they choose is “Couple” which is “limbo with the lady.” Both teams will take turns doing the limbo while holding their team’s lady. The team to pass with the lowest height wins.
Ji Seok-jin comments, “This is Gary’s game.” Aw. I was having so much fun watching the Sech Kies members that I almost forgot that Gary’s gone.
Kim Jong-kook goes first carrying Hwang Woo-seul-hye at 70 cm.
Lee Jaijin carries Song Ji-hyo and takes a couple tries to get past 70 cm.
Kim Jong-kook goes again at 65 cm.
Lee Jaijin wonders if he can switch. He thinks it’s more likely for Song Ji-hyo to be able to carry him over. Lee Jaijin knocks over the limbo pole.
It’s one win for the Running Man team. They need one more to win the first round of games.
The second mini-game is “Pom Saeng Pom Sa” which is a “mouth opening device speed quiz.” One person has to wear a mouth opening device and say related words while the other team members try to guess as many designated words in one minutes. The topic is world masterpieces.
Jang Suwon goes to bat for his team. They get Thumbelina, Pinocchio, and The Emperor’s New Clothes. They don’t get The Ant and the Grasshopper.
The next team gets Korean folktales as the topic. Lee Kwang-soo does so poorly for the Running Man Team that instead of trying to answer the questions, his teammates just yell at him for being the rice thief. They only get one. Now, the two teams are tied.
The third mini-game is “Road Fighter” which is a “pillow fight on a balance beam.”
Lee Kwang-soo falls off several times before even starting. Cue more grumbling about him being the rice thief. It’s Lee Kwang-soo vs. Eun Jiwon. Eun Jiwon hits Kwang-soo hard, but that just causes Jiwon to fall off.
Next is Lee Kwang-soo vs. Jang Suwon. The giraffe wins.
The third match is Lee Kwang-soo vs Lee Jaejin. Jaejin gets hit over and over again without being able to make a single attack. He falls over. He’s so goofy. I really like him in <Flower Crew>.
For winning best out of three, Hwang Woo-seul-hye gets a hint regarding the rice thief and a chance to exchange servants.
The hint is “the rice thief was born in the summer.” There are too many Sechs Kies members born in the summer, so she chooses not to exchange any of her servants.
Round Two: The Drawing the Servant Drew
Icheon is famous for its rice, so the PDs take them to a local restaurant that serves Icheon rice and various side dishes.
The second round is titled “The Drawing the Servant Drew.” It’s like telephone, but instead of whispering words, the servants (male players) have to draw something that is relayed to and redrawn by the five servants. The lady only gets to look at the final drawing to guess the key word.
The winning team gets a delicious meal, while the losing team gets just rice. Additionally, the losing team must go around the neighborhood and beg until they get six side dishes.
The order for drawing is
- Sechs Kies Team: Lee Jaijin → Jang Suwon → Kang Sunghoon → Kim Jaeduck → Eun Jiwon → Song Ji-hyo
- Running Man Team: Kim Jong-kook→ Yoo Jae-suk → Haha → Ji Seok-jin → Lee Kwang-soo → Hwang Woo-seul-hye
The Running Man team is up first with landmarks.
The first key term is Namsan Tower. Kim Jong-kook messes up his drawing. It’s funny because none of the men even know what they were drawing. Yoo Jae-suk thought he was drawing Christ the Redeemer, and Lee Kwang-soo thought he was drawing the Daejeon Expo, yet somehow, Hwang Woo-seul-hye manages to get it right.
The second one is the Colosseum. Hwang Woo-seul-hye incorrectly guesses Gwangandaegyo Bridge.
The third one is the Statue of Liberty. Hwang Woo-seul-hye miraculously gets this one too.
The Sechs Kies team has to draw occupations.
The first one is model. Lee Jaijin just draws a simple stick figure because he doesn’t know how to express model. Without much of a hint, Song Ji-hyo just goes with athlete.
Because Lee Jaijin did so poorly, the Sechs Kies team decides to switch Eun Jiwon into the first slot. He’s really good at expressing himself. He draws a plane and a woman in a skirt for a flight attendant. Unfortunately it gets translated poorly, and Song Ji-hyo guesses hunter.
The Running Man team gets the delicious meal while Sechs Kies and Song Ji-hyo have to beg for food. It seems like the locals don’t know ahead of time that they would be filming and just give them food out of the kindness of their hearts.
It must be pretty awkward for them begging, and on top of that, the poor guys needs to eat while walking around.
They get some kimchi from an ajumma and some more kimchi from another ajumma. The PD says that doesn’t count towards their six side dishes because they’re the same thing. Song Ji-hyo insists that they’re different because it’s fresh cabbage kimchi verses fermented kimchi. They find some raw cabbage, and eat that as a “side dish” as well. They just really want to get this done and over with as quickly as possible. At the third local’s house, they get mustard leaf kimchi.
It’s so delicious that Song Ji-hyo feeds it to the cameramen. A couple of the Sechs Kies members ask her to feed them too. She tells them to feed themselves.
At this point, we find out that the “rice thief” is Jang Suwon. He’s gotten various missions throughout the game in return for rice such as bare Lee Jaijin’s abs and do a love shot with the lady.
After leaving the restaurant, Hwang Woo-seul-hye gets the hint for winning the second round. The hint is the rice thief has the Korean character “ㅇ” in his family name. She exchanges Yoo Jae-suk and Lee Kwang-soo for Jang Suwon and Kang Sunghoon. Neither of their names start with “ㅇ” but they do contain that letter. She really is simple-minded. The other members tell her she can’t spell, but it’s too late to switch.
Round Three: The Lady’s Poof Hammer
Round three is a version of hide-and-seek titled “The Lady’s Poof Hammer.” Both teams will take turns being offense and defense.
The “lady” of the offense team has to find members of the other team and burst the balloons on their heads with a hammer. She gets one “servant” to help her while the rest of the servants on her team have to do an endurance relay. The longer they endure, the more time the lady gets to search. The team that pops the most balloons wins. The relay consists of
- sitting on a traffic cone
- hula hooping with massage balls
- standing on ice while barefoot
- maintaining splits
The Running Man team is up first while Sechs Kies has to hide. Hwang Woo-seul-hye of course chooses Kim Jong-kook to help her. Kim Jaeduck hides under a large bucket. Lee Kwang-soo walks into the forest and pops his balloon on some branches. He’s out already.
Yoo Jae-suk and Song Ji-hyo hide together. Hwang Woo-seul-hye gets Yoo Jae-suk first while and Kim Jong-kook chases right after Song Ji-hyo. Kim Jong-kook holds Song Ji-hyo down, there’s no escaping.
Lee Jae-jin hides in a trench. Time’s up. She gets three out of six.
Now it’s time for the Sechs Kies team to go offense. Song Ji-hyo’s helper is Lee Jaijin. They find Ji Seok-jin right away. Kim Jaeduck is doing really well with the hoola hoop, gaining a lot of time for Song Ji-hyo.
Meanwhile, Jang Suwon, the rice thief, is given the mission to hit Kim Jong-kook on the back of the head.
Lee Jaijin works really hard to find everyone. He even manages to get Haha who’s hiding in a staff equipment truck, and makes monkey noises to alert Song Ji-hyo everytime he finds someone. Why monkey nosies? I have no idea, but it’s hilarious. Lee Jaijin and Song Ji-hyo chase down Jang Suwon as well. Hwang Woo-seul-hye hides in a trench, but is eventually caught.
It’s the end of Round Three and Jang Suwon is busy trying to figure out how to hit Kim Jong-kook. Suddenly, Jang Suwon just smacks him and yells, “I’m the food thief!!!” He succeeds, but ends up confusing everyone. They think he accidentally thought it was the end of the entire game, and blurted out thinking he was victorious.
The final hint is irrelevant though, because Jang Suwon already completed his missions. He gets the rice bags donated in his name and the players on the winning team each get a bag of high quality Icheon rice.
All the MCs apologize to Lee Kwang-soo for accusing him of being the rice thief.
