Running Man Recap: Episode 327

Running Man Recap: Episode 327
Episode 327: Bromance War: November 27, 2016

Today’s <Running Man> takes place in Seomun Market in Daegu which is the fourth largest city in Korea. There are just four MCs in the show’s opening, Yoo Jae-suk, Ji Suk-jin, Lee Kwang-soo, and Haha. The PD asks if they feel lonely, and all four yell out “No!” It’s better this way because they don’t have to listen to the others nagging.

The PD just ignores their response and tells them that the concept of today’s first mission is “Welcome to Bromance House.” They have to enter the Bromance House by finding their little siblings.

Meanwhile, a couple of men with their faces cut out order food saying, “It’s okay, my big bro will pay for it.” They say their big bros have a lot of money, so they even order a round of coffee for the staff members. Today’s guests are actors Jo Jung-suk and Do Kyung-soo of EXO.

Yoo Jae-suk and Lee Kwang-soo find their “little brothers” pigging out on food. They’re happy to see the two actors, until Do Kyung-soo tells his “brother” Lee Kwang-soo that he needs to pay for their food. Jo Jung-suk adds to Yoo Jae-suk, “Yeah, we bragged about how our big bros are so rich.”

Yoo Jae-suk slyly responds, “Of course I don’t mind paying for you, but I didn’t bring my wallet.” The PD timely hands over Yoo Jae-suk’s and Lee Kwang-soo’s personal credit cards. He says he got them from their managers. This time, Yoo Jae’suk’s excuse is that his credit card only has a limit of 80,000 won (~80 USD). I’m not even sure if it’s possible to have that low a limit.

Jo Jung-suk suggests that they do a spaghetti kiss. The team with the longer amount of pasta left pays for their meal. Yoo Jae-suk and Jo Jung-suk finish with 1.2 cm left. Clazziquai’s “She Is” plays in the background during Lee Kwang-soo and Do Kyung-soo’s attmept. It’s the theme song whenever two guys do anything lovey dovey because of the lyrics about hidden feelings. Their lips touch and Do Kyung-soo shirks back leaving a fairly long noodle strand.

Lee Kwang-soo has to pay. He’s shocked to see that the PD actually goes through with using his personnal card.

For the round of 20 coffees that the younger bros thoughtlessly purchased, Yoo Jae-suk asks the waitress to pick either the number one or two. One means that Lee Kwang-soo pays, and two means Yoo Jae-suk. The waitress picks number one, and poor Lee Kwang-soo has to pay again.

The Bromance House is located in an office just above Seomun Market. It looks like the other four MCs just hung around waiting for the guests to be found. Today’s sibling pairs are

  • Yellow: Lee Kwang-soo and Do Kyung-soo
  • Blue: Ji Suk-jin and Kim Jong-kook
  • Grey: Yoo Jae-suk and Jo Jung-suk
  • Green: Haha and Song Ji-hyo

Since Jo Jung-suk and Do Kyung-soo are currently promoting their film <My Annoying Brother>, today’s theme is “Bromance House.”

Game Rules

Today’s goal is to avoid the punishment. Only one team will be punished. Each team has missions where they will pick up cards. There are eight pairs for a total of sixteen cards. Two of them are penalty cards while the others have cute actions like “kiss on the cheek.” At the end of three rounds, the teams will play “Go Fish” and the team left with the penalty card pair has to pay for the meals of 100 staff members.

Round One: Bromance Duet Singing Room

The first game is a singing contest where the winning team gets to look at a single card before choosing theirs. Each team will sing a duet and the team that gets the most points between the kareoke machine score and a hidden criteria wins. Do Kyung-soo is an idol singer and Jo Jung-suk has a successful musical career, so it looks like they have the advantage.

For the singing order, Yoo Jae-suk recommends that they pinch each other’s thighs and the one who endures the longest gets to go last. Song ji-hyo complains that Kim Jong-kook’s thighs are too thick to pinch, so he instead counters that they should pull each others ears. This seems like a needlessly painful way to determine the order, but it leads to more wacky antics, so I won’t complain.

Yoo Jae-suk gives up first followed by Haha. Yoo Jae-suk tells them to switch directions, and Do Kyung-soo gets up and switches seats with Lee Kwang-soo to mess with him. Now the switch doesn’t have any impact. Jo Jung-suk is out next. The final three are Do Kyung-soo, Song Ji-hyo, and Kim Joong-kook. Do Kyung-soo out. Song Ji-hyo is doing surprising well, but is no match for Kim Jong-kook. She cries out in pain like a cat.

Now that the order has been decided, first up is Jo Jung-suk and Yoo Jae-suk who sing “This is the Moment” from the musical <Jekyll & Hyde>. He sounds beautiful of course. The MCs wave their hands in the air like they’re at a concert. Every time Yoo Jae-suk tries to sing along, he gets his microphone taken by the other Running Man MCs. They don’t want him to interrupt the professional musical actor. When Jo Jung-suk ends, he gets a standing ovation, but the karaoke machine doesn’t agree and he gets a measly 86 points.

Lee Kwang-soo and Do Kyung-soo are up next.  Their names sound like they’re brothers. They sing Kim Bum-soo’s “Bogoshipda” from the <Stairway to Heaven> OST. 88 points.

Ji Suk-jin and Lee Jong-kook go with an upbeat song. It’s Jung Sam’s “Did You See.” They also get 88 points. I guess the kareoke machine is stingy with its points.

Haha and Song Ji-hyo sing Uhm Jung-hwa’s “Rose of Betrayal.” They get the highest score with 91 points.

The PD now announces that the secret criteria was for teams to get others to stand up while they were singing. It’s two times the number of people who stand up. Since no one stood up for Haha and Song Ji-hyo, they get 91 + (0 x 0) = 91 points. Everyone stood up for Jo Jung-suk and Yoo Jae-suk get, so they have  86 + (6 x 2) = 98 points. Lee Kwang-soo and Do Kyung-soo get 88 ( 3 x 2) = 94 points. Ji Seok-jin and Kim Jong-kook are in last with 88 + (1 x 2) = 89 points.

That means that Jo Jung-suk and Yoo Jae-suk get to peek at an extra card. Jo Jung-suk flips over a card, but for some reason he doesn’t use that to his advantage and ends up picking a different one which ends up being a penalty card. Do Kyung-soo picks “3 sets of aegyo,”  Song Ji-hyo gets “forehead kiss” and Kim Jong-kook picks “highway.” The contents of these cards don’t really matter, they just need to get anything besides the penalty card.

Round Two: Trust in Brother

The winning team of this round gets to pick three cards, second place gets 2 cards, and third place gets 1 card.

The first question is picture guessing. There’s a drawing, and the little siblings have to guess the word it’s supposed to depict. However, the “buzzer” for this round is aegyo which means that they have to do something cute before getting a chance to guess. Wrong guesses result in the older brothers getting hit by a metal pan. Correct answers means that all the other older brothers get hit.

The first question is a picture of a dancing bear? Song Ji-hyo walks up and does the gwiyomi dance and guesses Gary. *tears* It’s wrong.

The PD tells them that the first syllable is “gae” and it has three letters.

Jo Jung-suk correctly guesses personal talent (gae in ki).

Do Kyung-soo gets the second question correct which is corner kick.

The third question is an ajjushi quiz which is basically the Korean equivalent of dad jokes. This time instead of aegyo, the little siblings have to do a dance correctly before they get a chance to asnwer. Song Ji-hyo fails at the “TT” dance and after every fail, Haha gets hit.

After getting hit by a metal lid three times, he gets frustrated and walks out to shows her how to do the TT dance properly. It’s the angriest version I’ve ever seen of this song. Jo Jung-suk correctly guesses the answer to the question, what is “letter of apology in English?” The answer is “global.” (These questions don’t make sense in English . . . although they don’t really make that much sense in Korean either.”

The little siblings switch spots with the older brothers.

The fourth question is movie quotes with aegyo. The first picture is a scene from Jo Jung-suk’s <Introduction to Architecture>. It’s a famous line, Yoo Jae-suk correctly guess, “What’s wrong with you?” The MCs then ask Jo Jung-suk’s to do his famous line from the movie where he explains how to French kiss.

For the final question, they have to do the “Growl” dance which Do Kyung-soo professionaly demostrates. Yoo Jae-suk correctly guesses whisper.

The results are

  • 1st: 3 cards for Yoo Jae-suk and Jo Jung-suk
  • 2nd: 2 cards for Ji Suk-jin and Kim Jong-kook
  • 3rd: 1 card for Lee Kwang-soo and Do Kyung-soo
  • 4th: 0 cards for Haha and Song Ji-hyo

Do Kyung-soo ends up picking up the other penalty card.

Round Three: Night Market Bingo

In this round, the winning team gets a chance to exchange all their cards. Each team gets a bingo card with various food vendors on each slot. Meanwhile, the <Running Man> staff members are eating at these vendors, which the losing team will have to pay for.

They play a few games in the Bromance House to win slots. Each team writes down which games they want to try, and the PD picks them randomly.

The first battle is couple jump rope for the pork belly roll with veggies slot. It’s Lee Kwang-soo and Do Kyung-soo versus Ji Seok-jin and Kim Jong-kook. Ji Seok-jin and Kim Jong-kook mess up one the first jump. Lee Kwang-soo and Do Kyung-soo also get stuck on the first jump. Maybe it’s because of the height difference? Both teams get another chance to break the tie. This time Ji Seok-jin and Kim Jong-kook get one jump. Lee Kwang-soo and Do Kyung-soo get one as well. Another tie breaker. This battle is strangely intesnse. Ji Seok-jin and Kim Jong-kook get zero. Lee Kwang-soo and Do Kyung-soo win with just one. Yay!

Lee Kwang-soo and Do Kyung-so get to eat the pork belly roll with veggies and get the relevant slot on their bingo card.

Next is jegichagi which is like Korean hackysack. Both teams get one chance to catch the jegi and continue from there. Ji Suk-jin gets 4. Kim Jong-kook gets a total of 22. Yoo Jae-suk gets 13. Jo Jung-suk does well, but then catches his jegi in mid air which he isn’t allowed to do because Yoo Jae-suk already used their chance.

For winning, Ji Suk-jin and Kim Jong-kook get to eat mung bean pancakes. Jo Jung-suk tries to steal the food when no one’s looking, but of course he gets caught. We speed through a few more games such as “wrap battle.”

At the end, Lee Kwang-soo and Do Kyung-soo are in the lead with four slots, Ji Seok-jin and Kim Jong-kook have two slots, and the other two teams have none.

Now it’s time to head to the actual night market for more bingo slots. I wonder if the production crew made them play games inside because the night market wasn’t open yet? There are 70 vendors over 350 meters.

At each location, the teams have to successfully complete a mission in order to get that bingo slot.

Lee Kwang-soo and Do Kyung-soo only need to get two more for bingo. At the grilled meat vendor, they have to light a match in one try. Both brothers do.

All they need now is the tornado potatoes slot. Haha and Song Ji-hyo get there first. They need to juggle three potatoes five times. Haha fails. Do Kyung-soo fails. Jo Jung-suk succeeds with ease. Seems like the potato place is really popular.

Next, Yoo Jae-suk and Jo Jung-suk go to the chicken skewers vendor where the mission is to play knock each other over with another team.  After a stalemate between Jo Jung-suk and Lee Kwang-soo. Do Kyung-soo manages to knock over Jo Jung-suk.

At this point, Lee Kwang-soo and Do Kyung-soo recall the rules where if no teams manage to get a bingo, the team with the most slots wins. They change their tactic to try to block other teams from succedding in their missions.

On the other hand, Yoo Jae-suk and Jo Jung-suk have pretty much given up and spend their time eating delicious food instead of acquiring bingo slots.

Lee Kwang-soo and Do Kyung-soo block the Kim Jong-kook and Ji Suk-jin team from their bingo by completing and stealing a mission from them. They have to peel temporary tattoos perfectly in one try.

Final Mission: Catch the Penalty

For the final mission, the teams play Go Fish with the cards they’ve acquired over the past three rounds. The team left with the pair of penalty cards loses. Do Kyung-soo and Lee Kwang-soo hold one penalty card while Yoo Jae-suk and Jo Jung-suk have the other. They’ll have to bluff their way out of the penalty.

At one point,  Haha and Song Ji-hyo are left with the two penalty cards, but luckily Lee Kwang-soo grabs one of them. Lee Kwang-soo and Do Kyung-soo finish first. Yoo Jae-suk and Jo Jung-suk finish second. It’s down to Ji Suk-jin & Lee Jong-kook and Haha & Song Ji-hyo.

Haha and Song Ji-hyo are stuck with the bill. It comes out to 446,000 won (~446 USD)
