Episode 328: Winter Busan Busking: December 4, 2016
Today’s episode takes place in the seaside city of romance, Busan!
The Running Man MCs are divided into teams of two with each duo wearing matching jackets.
- Yoo Jae-suk & Ji Suk-jin
- Kim Jong-kook & Song Ji-hyo
- Haha & Lee Kwang-soo
There are three popular Busan foods on a table in front of the MCs. They are Dongnae scallion pancakes, sea eels, and pork and rice soup.
The PD asks each team to choose a food which they’ll use to form the rest of their teams. The PD tells them that the theme of today’s game is the Busan Vacation ‘Crossword Taste Solving’ Race.
Busan Vacation ‘Crossword Taste Solving’ Race
Today’s guests are all nine members of the girl group Twice. That’s a lot of guests, so I hope there aren’t any issues with screen time.
They do the “TT” and “Cheer Up” dances and Song Ji-hyo comments that she watched the music video for “TT” yesterday. She’s proud of herself for doing so because Haha yelled at her last week for not knowing the “TT” dance.
Since there are nine Twice members, they’ll be three of them per team. They’re each told to choose their favorite Busan dish to decide who’ll they’ll be with. Chaeyeong, Nayeon, Momo, and Jeongyeon all pick Dongrae scallion pancakes, and since thats one too many, they do rock-paper-scissors to see who has to move teams. Chaeyeon looks so sad when she loses.
The three teams are
- Dongnae scallion pancakes: Yoo Jae-suk, Ji Suk-jin, Jeongyeon, Momo, and Nayeon
- Sea eel: Kim Jong-kook, Song Ji-hyo, Tzuyu, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung
- Pork and rice soup: Haha, Lee Kwang-soo, Jihyo, Daheyon, and Sana
Today’s goal is to fill out a crossword puzzle. However instead of solving answers to given questions like you would do in a traditional crossword puzzle, the teams need to ask Busan locals for popular local foods which they can use to fill up the crossword puzzle slots, but only if the spelling of those foods fit. They can fudge the names a little bit by adding adjectives to the words, but for the most part, it’ll be a bit tricky to find foods that fit exactly. Every time they fill in a slot, they need to move to a new location by car, which makes the mission more time consuming.
There are also a few bonus opportunities. There are chance locations in Haeundae Street and Kukju Market. The teams that go there can win a chance to fill in two words at once. Also, if they fill in the red spots on the crossword puzzle, they get the chance to erase one word from another team of their choice. The team that finishes five foods first will be given an advantage for the final round.
Round One: Twice Flowers have Blossomed
The first mission is “Twice Flowers have Bloomed” which is a version of the popular Korean game ‘The Rose of Sharon has Bloomed.” which is the Korean version of “Red Light, Green Light.” In this version the teams have to collectively finish a Busan fast food set which contains tteokbokki, fish cake soup, and two cokes. They can only eat while VJ Kwon-ryeol says the phrase”Twice Flowers have Bloomed” and they have to freeze while he’s done talking. If he catches anyone moving, they’ll be kicked out.
The winning team gets to fill out the first slot in the crossword puzzle.
Kim Jong-kook complains about the soda and asks for diet coke. The other MCs yell at him to just eat it. He responds, “Two cokes are a whole 224 calories.” Psh. That’s nothing.
No one gets caught on the first”Twice Flowers have Bloomed.” On his second try, VJ Kwon-ryeol says that Dahyun smiled at him. She says she didn’t. He’s like, “Oh okay.” He’s such a huge Twice fan that he doesn’t dare to disagree. Yoo jae-suk gets flustered at him for not doing his job properly and not kicking out Dahyun. .
On the third try, Ji Suk-jin’s fish cake shakes. LOL. He’s so strict with the MCs. Jihyo laughs. She gets kicked out oto.
Lee Kwang-soo and Haha stand with their backs turned which is a genius strategy to keep eating since VJ Kwon-ryul can’t see their mouths. Ji Suk-jin calls them out for continuing to eat when they’re not supposed to. While VJ Kwon-ryeol checks, the others eat. Lee Kwang-soo get caught next.
Yoo Jae-suk continues drinking his soup while the VJ is busy calling out Lee Kwang-soo.
He accidentally sprays Jeongyeong with the soup, but at least he’s finished and the Yoo Jae-suk, Ji Suk-jin, Jeongyeon, Momo, and Nayeon team fill out first slot with Dongnae scallion pancakes.
Round Two: Finding Five Busan Foods
The winning them not only gets one crossword slot, but they also get to stay there to work on the next crossword puzzle word, while the other two teams next to relocate which takes up extra time.
Yoo Jae-suk, Ji Suk-jin, Jeongyeon, Momo, and Nayeon now need to ask a local for some food recommendations. Nayeon says that they should just pretend they’re locals so they can recommend the food themselves. Each of these girls claim to be from Busan, even Momo who’s Japanese pretends. To prove that they’re locals. they all try their hand at the Busan accent, “Oppa ya~.”
Meanwhile, Kim Jong-kook, Song Ji-hyo, Tzuyu, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung head to Kukje Market for the 1 + 1 bonus. Kim Jong-kook complains that winning isn’t important. They should just feed the female idols some tasty food.
Haha, Lee Kwang-soo, Jihyo, Daheyon, and Sana look for a place to eat pork and rice soup. Lee Kwang-soo finds a place just 370 meters away. Lee Kwang-soo laments that they don’t have a two day filming. They arrive at the pork and rice soup restaurant and order a couple bowls. This is Sana’s first time trying it. She says “the meat is soft and the soup tastes kind.” Hm. I wonder what “kindness” tastes like.
Yoo Jae-suk, Ji Suk-jin, Jeongyeon, Momo, and Nayeon head towards Haeundae beach for the other 1+1 bonus opportunity. They try to find “National” Eonyang bulgogi. The dish doesn’t generally have the word national in it, but they just add it to fit it in the crossword puzzle. Now they just need to find a local to recommend the dish.
Yoo Jae suk asks a couple teenagers walking along the beach if they’re from Busan. They are. He asks if they like meat, trying to get them to say Eonyang Bulgogi, but the teen girls answer, “Yes, I like grilled clams.” Poor guys. Looks like no bulgogi for them.
They now have to find a clam place. It’ll be tough because most clam restaurants are open at night since they’re considered pub fare.
Nayeon asks a restaurant owner if they do clams. The female employee in the back shakes her head, but the male employee emphatically says yes. The team walks in to eat.
VJ Kwon-yeol is smiling as he films Twice. He’s such a huge fan. This is Nayeon’s first time having grilled clams. They wonder how they’re going to get the next local to say Eonyang bulgogi. They plan to go in front of an Eonyang bulgogi restaurant and ask a local there.
Kim Jong-kook and Song Ji-hyo arrive at an eel place in Kukje Market. Song Ji-hyo said she was so mad about the “TT” dance last week, that she watched the music video diligently. Flashback to Song Ji-hyo’s “TT” from last week. The Twice members show her how to do it properly. Song Ji-hyo is quite grumpy. She doesn’t want to do the dance and does the “ㅠㅠ” Korean crying symbol instead of “TT.”
The eels are still alive? That’s a bit scary. Kim Jong-kook, “They’re alive.” It’s a famous quote from the film <Nameless Gangster>, and the song “I Heard a Rumor” from the soundtrack plays in the background. The movie took place in Busan, so it’s pretty appropriate.
Meanwhile, Lee Kwang-soo is posturing in the bus. He says he will do whatever he can to get his teammates a win today. If he wins this one, he doesn’t need to win again for another year.
Jihyo says she was a huge fan of Lee Kwang-soo since before she debuted. Sana says she likes Haha, Lee Kwang-soo, “Stop. Jihyo’s not done talking yet.” LOL. Jihyo continues that she really liked <High Kick Through the Roof>, especially his mosquito dance. He’s embarrassed but does the dance for her. It’s the first time he’s done it in years.
Sana then finishes saying she like Haha because “his name is Haha, so it’s refreshing?” Perhaps her Korean skills are still limited? Otherwise what she is saying sounds a bit huh? Lee Kwang-soo jokes that his name must sound too muggy and refreshing.
Haha, Lee Kwang-soo, Jihyo, Daheyon, and Sana then arrive at a pork belly restaurant. It’s a 1 + 1 chance mission which means that they have the chance to get an extra word here without changing locations. They have to finish an actual crossword puzzle before three VJs finish eating.
Sana uses her aegyo to tell the VJs to please eat slowly. Sana, “Please eat sloooooooooooowly. Chew slowly. Isn’t it hot? I don’t think it’s fully cute? Don’t you want to drink some water?”
Since she doesn’t speak Korean well enough to figure out the crossword puzzles, she gets put in charge of slowing down the VJs.
Sana grabs the last piece of pork belly away from the VJs so that her teammates have more time to get the last question.
They finish all the questions, but unfortunately, they fail because Haha misspelled “laundry rope.”
They go for another try with a new crossword puzzle. They hope that the VJs aren’t as hungry now, so maybe they’ll eat slowly. Lee Kwang-soo give the VJs water to slow them down. Lee Kwang-soo lies, “Water is a specialty in Busan.”
Sana again is in charge to trying to slow down the VJs. She grabs the tongs and cooks the meat to well-done. She also smacks the VJs chopsticks away every time they try to grab some pork belly pieces. There are just four pieces left.
The team completes their second attempt just as Yoo Jae-suk, Ji Suk-jin, Jeongyeon, Momo, and Nayeon arrive. That means they blocked them from getting the 1 + 1 mission as well as a erasing opportunity.
Since the team has a chance to attack another team, Jeongyeon yells to her opponent Lee Kwang-soo, “I love you Kwang-soo Oppa! Don’t use the block on us.” Yoo Jae-suk and Ji Suk-jin, “Jihyo nuna I love you too.” They even do a deep bow.
Haha and Lee Kwang-soo think over whether to attack Yoo Jae-suk and Ji Suk-jin since they’re in the lead, but are hesitating because they said I love you.
Lee Kwang-soo says, “It’s been too long since I’ve heard the word I love you.” His teammates say, “No, don’t fall for it. I love you too.”
While traveling to another location Jeongyeon notices that Haha and Lee Kwang-soo’s team erased one of their crossword puzzle answers. Mina, “What traitors.”
Yoo Jae-suk, Ji Suk-jin, Jeongyeon, Momo, and Nayeon find an Eonyang bulgogi place and ask a local for what to eat. The whole time the point at the Eonyang bulgogi signage and say they can’t go far. *hint wink nudge nudge* The locals give them the correct answer. Yay!
They get just two servings of bulgogi between the six of them. While the wait for the food to come out, they plan their next move to be coffee.
Once the food comes out, Yoo Jae-suk jokes about he can’t see the Twice members’ faces, just the top of their heads because they’re so busy eating. He wonders if these are the same people who already had some scallion pancakes. They’re so hungry that they get one more serving even though they’re low on time. Sana, “Good, Good.”
While they eat, they get another one of their crossword puzzle answers erased. Haha, Lee Kwang-soo, Jihyo, Daheyon, and Sana got another erasing opportunity after eating spoon worms. Jeongyeon looks so sad.
Ji Suk-jin pouts, “How come they keep attacking us?” Nayeon is pissed.
Haha, Lee Kwang-soo, Jihyo, Daheyon, and Sana go get coffee. Yoo Jae-suk, Ji Suk-jin, Jeongyeon, Momo, and Nayeon also head to a coffee shop. They can’t just get coffee though, they need to find a local to reccomend it first so they tell a local that they’re thirsty and need a recommendation for something to drink. He almost says “beer” when Nayeon interrupts to say shes about to get a nosebleed. The words for nosebleed and coffee sound similar in Korean.
Later Nayeon calls Lee Kwang-soo to tell him how disappointed she is in him for erasing two of their words. She says that she used to really like him, but now, “It’s the end for you.”
Yoo Jaesuk adds, “It’s war.” Both teams have two words while Kim Jong-kook and Song Ji-hyo’s team has just one.
The last place team of Kim Jong-kook, Song Ji-hyo, Tzuyu, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung are at Kukje Market. There is a special mission here and so they get a crossword puzzle, where they have to find the items in the market to fill up the words in the puzzle. They have to get at least five words. Tzuyu takes her time looking at the hanbok and having tea. She takes so long the other team members wondeg if she’s signing autographs. Kim Jong-kook, “Tzuyu? Tzuyu? TZUYU!!!!”
Song Ji-hyo wonders if she’s a spy. Tzyuyu bought sweet potato and walnut snacks. Yeah. . . that’s not really part of the game.
Haha, Lee Kwang-soo, Jihyo, Daheyon, and Sana arrive just after Kim Jong -kook and Song Ji-hyo’s team finish. They also do the puzzle.
Meanwhile, Kim Jong-kook, Song Ji-hyo, Tzuyu, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung have already gotten four words by doing the “1+1” chance. They get fish cakes and king crab. Now they only need one more word to win round two.
The score right now is
- 4 words – 4 words – Kim Jong-kook, Song Ji-hyo, Tzuyu, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung
- 2 words – Haha, Lee Kwang-soo, Jihyo, Daheyon, and Sana
- 2 words – Yoo Jae-suk, Ji Suk-jin, Jeongyeon, Momo, and Nayeon
While Haha and Lee Kwang-soo’s team are doing the challenge at Gukje Market, everyone yells at Sana to hurry. I guess it must be hard for the international members.
Once they finish, they ask some coffee shop employees for a food recommendation. They get wheat noodles but unfortunately this isn’t a place that sells wheat noodles inside Gukje Market.
While Kim Jong-kook and Song Ji-hyo’s team is having delicious king crab, Haha and Lee Kwang-soo’s team hurry over to a wheat noodle restaurant. They ask for just one bowl of noodles but the generous owners give them another bowl. Then they give them a free plate of dumplings. They’re so kind, but the team is frsutrated because they need to eat quickly so that they can move on to another food.
They need just one more. The restaurant owner then recommends them some hotteok which is sold right around the corner. This will be their fifth and final food. Meanwhile, Kim Jong-kook and Song Ji-hyo’s team is also getting their final food which is coffee.
It’s neck and neck, and it’ll all come down to who finishes eating first.
Haha and Lee Kwang-soo’s team gets it first. Yay!
- 1st place: Haha, Lee Kwang-soo, Jihyo, Daheyon, and Sana
- 2nd place: Kim Jong-kook, Song Ji-hyo, Tzuyu, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung
- 3rd place: Yoo Jae-suk, Ji Suk-jin, Jeongyeon, Momo, and Nayeon
Round Three: Secret Run
It’s now night time. The crew relocates to a light festival.
Today’s winner gets an 8 piece prize set including portable messagers, octopus, squid, anchovies, Eonyang bulgogi, seaweed, fish cakes, and octopus snacks. Winner takes it all.
Round three is secret betting. The teams get to bet lollipops to do a challenge. They get lollipops depending on how they did in round two. The first place team gets 15 lollipops, second place gets 10, and third place gets 5. The team to bet the most candies gets to attempt the mini-game. If the succeed at the mini-game, they get double the anmount of lollipops they had bet. If they fail, they the lollipops get divided by the other teams.
The first mini-game is breaking apples with your bare hands. The team has to choose one person to break 18 apples in under 30 seconds.
Yoo Jae-suk bluffs that he’ll bet all five of his lollipops. For practice, Yoo Jae-suk tries to break an apple, can’t even get one apple. Ha. I don’t think it’ll be a good idea to bet any.
Haha and Lee Kwang-soo’s team wins the bet with three lollipops.
Lee Kwang-soo tries his hand at it. Flashback to his Twice teammates saying, “Oppa, I love you.”
Hes doing pretty well. The Twice members help him by handing them one by one. He just misses the goal. He got 12 apples.
The second mini-game is splits relay where the members have to spread their legs collectively over 10 meters. Mina has 11 years of ballet experience, so she’s feeling confident.
Song Ji-hyo wants to bet all of her lollipops. They have ten. They luckily win the bet, as the other teams only bet one each.
Tzuyu, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung all extend their legs quite a bit. Song Ji-hyo splits her legs almost all the way, Kim Jong-kook has long legs, so that works for him.
(It’s so cute how Lee Kwang-soo quietly pulls down Song Ji-hyo’s sweater to cover her butt.)
The third and final mini-game is team jump rope. They have to get 35 jumps.
Yoo Jae-suk, Ji Suk-jin, Jeongyeon, Momo, and Nayeon know they can’t win the betting stage with just five lollipops so they just eat theirs.
Song Ji-hyo and Kim Jong-kook win the bet so they spin the rope while the three Twice members jump. They get to 35 pretty easily.
They are the final winners!
