Episode 329: United or Divided: December 11, 2016
Today’s show takes place on a beautiful morning in the city of Jeonju.
There are three items awaiting the MCs. They are a king’s throne, a straw mat, and a flogging table.
Before filming officially starts, the main PD asks the MCs an important question. “United or divided?” If they pick united, they will all suffer the same fate. If they go with divided, two people will get a positive outcome, two will get a neutral, and two will get a negative outcome. All six have to decide unanimously whether to go with united or divided.
At first, they decide to go with united, because they don’t want anyone to be lonely, but then Yoo Jae-suk asks, “Will someone definitely be ruined?” They suddenly decide to go with divided. It’ll be more fun that way.
Since they go with divided, each MC will pick a number between 1-6 to decide their fate using the ladder. They’ll do the opening while sitting in a king’s throne, on a straw mat, or while being flogged.
The results of the random ladder game are
- Song Ji-hyo: straw mat
- Kim Jong-kook: king’s throne
- Yoo Jae-suk: flogging
- Ji Seok-jin: flogging
- Lee Kwang-soo: king’s throne
- Haha: straw mat
Just for fun, Yoo Jae-suk spins the wheel for if they had chosen “united.” They would have all gotten a flogging. It’s a good thing they decided to go with divided.
Probability Trip: United or Divided
Today’s race is titled the <Probability Trip>.
The course is as follows: Deokjin Park → Hanok Village Tourism → Korean Table d’hote → Nambu Market Tour → Guesthouse Visit
For each course, the MCs will have to decide to go with “united” or “divided” which will determine which handicap or advantage they will have to use during the course. They will get R points for every mission they complete at each course. The prize list is
- 200 R – Europe plane ticket
- 100 R – New laptop
- 50 R – Grilled short rib patty set
- 30 R – Liquor set
- 20 R – Jeonju laver set
- 10 R – Jeonju hanji fan
- 0 R – Buy the PD a 29,000 won lunch set
Throughout the opening, Yoo Jae-suk and Ji Suk-jin get randomly flogged. The PD later tells them that they got hit every time they asked a question.
Round One: Ohnara Ohnara Quiz
The first course is at Deokjin Park. They arrive at a pond in the middle of the park where they find a spinning wheel and the ladder thing again to use depending on whether they go with united or divided.
Jeonju is famous for pansori music, so this mission will make use of that. There is one pansori singer on a boat in the middle of the pond and another on a dock. They’ll be singing various kpop songs in the style of pansori genre. The MCs need to paddle out toward the singers, so that they can hear them and guess the names of the songs. The first to get it gets 40 R points, the second gets 30 R points, and the third gets 10 R points.
This time they go with united. All of them will have to use either flippers, oars, or fly swatters to paddle their boats. They get flippers. At least they didn’t get fly swatters. That would have taken forever. Everyone only gets one flipper, so they have to coordinate the rowing with their boat mate. There are two people per boat, but it’s every person for him or her self for the song guessing.
The songs are pretty tricky. Pansori repeats a lot of sounds, so it’s hard to tell until the first singer says, “Hey baby boy . . . up up down.”
It’s EXID’s “Up & Down.”
Kim Jong-kook and Lee Kwang-soo get it right, at exactly the same time.
The singer for the second question is back at the dock. She sings, “The bell that rings every day . . . “
It’s Twice’s “Cheer Up.”
Lee Kwang-soo and Song Ji-hyo both guess “Sha Sha Sha.” Song Ji-hyo’s next guess is “Shut Up Baby.” They know the song, they just don’t know the title. Eventually, Ji Suk-jin gets the correct answer.
After round one, Kim Jong-kook and Lee Kwang-soo are in the lead with 40 R points each. Ji Suk-jin is in second place with 10 R points, while everyone else has zero.
Round Two: Secret Operation in Hanok Village
Round two is to carry out various missions in the Jeonju Hanok Village without getting noticed by the people in the area. First, they choose between “united or divided.” They go with divided. The MCs do another round of ladders to decide whether they get an advantage or a handicap during their mission.
The results are
- Haha: professional makeup
- Song Ji-hyo: hat and jacket
- Ji Suk-jin: nametag
- Kim Jong-kook: professional makeup
- Lee Kwang-soo: nametag
- Yoo Jae-suk: hat and jacket
Round two will take place at three different locations withint the Hanok Village, and two MCs will try their missions at each location. The MCs pick pieces of paper to determine their partners and missions.
Kim Jong-kook is dressed as a famous giseng, Eo Woo-dong. There are actually lots of tourists dressed up in similar outfits, so it should be too bad. The first mission is for Kim Jong-kook and Lee Kwang-soo. They have to buy rice cake skewers and return to the bus without getting noticed. Kim Jong-kook practices changing his voice. He doesn’t want to get caught while ordering the food.
While driving a tour bus to the Hanok village, the PD informs them that the rice cake place is closed, so they change to dumplings.
Once they get off the bus, and start their mission Lee Kwang-soo spins around and around so that no one see his nametag on his back. He manages to get to the dumpling shop without noticing, but as soon as he orders, the shop owner asks, aren’t you “Lee Kwang-soo?” Some tourists then also ask him for photos. He’s not one to go down by himself, so he asks Kim Jong-kook who’s ordering food next to him, “Could you take a photo for us please.” The tourists then recognize Kim Jong-kook too.
Kim Jong-kook angrily storms away, but Lee Kwang-soo is busy posing in front of crowds of fans. As Lee Kwang-soo takes his time with the photos, Kim Jong-kook just gets angrier and angrier on the bus.
Even though both failed, Lee Kwang-soo still bought some shrimp dumplings to share with the rest of the MCs on the bus.
The next location is Jeongdong Cathedral. Both Haha and Song Ji-hyo succeed in taking selfies in front of it, but this part gets cut out except for a short mention.
The third mission is to pick a fortune from a fortune telling vending machine without getting noticed. It’s Yoo Jae-suk’s and Ji Suk-jin’s turn.
Yoo Jae-suk jokes that he has two jobs, a celebrity and a secret agent. He was shocked when he saw the <The Bourne Identity> because that’s pretty much his life story. He spied on Ji Suk-jin for his wife, and that’s how she always knows where he is. LOL.
Yoo Jae-suk picks up a tourist map to cover his face. Ji Suk-jin does the same spinning and crouching move as Lee Kwang-soo to cover up his nametag.
Yoo Jae-suk succeeds in getting to the vending machine. He then pulls off Ji Suk-jin’s nametag and runs for the bus before anyone can notice him. Big nose fails. The tourists around him hear the nametag being ripped and ask for photos. Yoo Jae-suk thinks he’s in the clear, since he’s gotten the fortune, but now he can’t find their bus. While looking around, a tourist comes up and shakes his hand. This starts of a wave of tourists coming up to him. Both fail.
When he finally does get back on the bus, Yoo Jae-suk reads his fortune aloud which says, that he’ll have a prosperous year as longs as he continues on his path. Also, rather than staying in one place, it’ll be better for him to move.
Round Three: Korean Table d’Hote in Jeonju
The <Running Man> MCs then arrive at a Korean traditional restaurant where once again they have to choose “united or divided.” They choices are table d’hote, one bite, or rice balls. Kim Jong-kook suggests that they go with divided, so that at least two people will be able to eat the delicious table d’hote.
The results of the ladder game are
- Song Ji-hyo: rice balls
- Kim Jong-kook : one bite
- Yoo Jae-suk: table d’hote
- Ji Suk-jin: rice balls
- Lee Kwang-soo: one bite
- Haha: table d’hote
Song Ji-hyo complains about the color of the rice balls. It looks fine too me. She must just be upset with the delicious table spread in front of her. Kim Jong-kook and Lee Kwang-soo both try to take the biggest bite since they only get one.
Kim Jong-kook takes a humongous bite out of the beef tartar. He then smacks Lee Kwang-soo in the head when he tries to take his bite. Kim Jong-kook is probably still mad about Kwang-soo taking him down at the dumpling shop.
After eating lunch, they play another round of “united or divided” to decide who has to pay. The options are pay for 50 staff members lunches, just the MC lunches, or 0 won. The staff lunch came out to 392,000 won, and the Running Man team lunch came out to 186,000 won. They go with divided. The prices are rounded up and divided by two so . . .
- Ji Suk-jin: 100,000 won
- Song Ji-hyo: 200,000 won
- Kim Jong-kook : 0 won
- Haha: 100,000 won
Now there’s just the highest and the lowest amounts left.
- Lee Kwang-soo: 200,000 won
- Yoo Jae-suk: 0 won
Round Four: Shopping in Nambu Market
The MCs then arrive at a traditional market. This mission is worth 50 R points. They need to buy items according to given acronyms, but first they need money, so they’ll auction off their signed nametags to their staff members.
Lee Kwang-soo says he will later pay twice the amount. The other MCs all call him out that it’s cheating. Lee Kwang-soo’s nametag sells for 13,000 won to the maknae writer.
Ji Suk-jin offers a blind date with his youngest sister in law. He’ll even pay for their first date. Yoo Jae-suk asks about the potential female buyers. Ji Suk-jin adds that he also has a brother in law who is . . . 48 years old. He gets just 5,000 won. Ha.
Next is Song Ji-hyo. She says they buyer can take a selfie with her. The MCs make fun of her for such a weak offer. She will also pay for a meal up to 29,900. That’s because the Kim Young-ran Act (The Anti-Corruption and Bribery Prohibition Act) limits meals to 30,000 won. (Anti-bribery doesn’t actually apply in this case though. Song Ji-hyo is just trying to be funny.) She gets a whopping 50,000 won from the jimmy jib PD.
Haha will pay for up to 200,000 won at his BBQ restaurant in Hongdae. He gets 100,000 won!
Kim Jong-kook offers Turbo concert tickets for two for the Valentines day concert and a backstage photo opp with the concert special guests, and will even prepare a special event on stage for them. He gets just 20,000 won. Wow, what a steal. The staff member plans to take his girlfriend.
Yoo Jae-suk tries to shake hands with the potential buyers. The other MCs stop him claiming it’s unfair. He says the buyer gets a chance to hit his forehead. It’s a good way to get rid of stress. The betting starts at 100,100 won. It seems like the PDs have a lot of pent up anger. The winning bet is 150,000 won by VJ Kwon Ryeol.
Before he gets to hit Yoo Jae-suk, the other MC coach him and make him practice. All that practice pays off because VJ Kwon Ryeol hits Yoo Jae-suk so hard that he falls over backwards.
Not wanting to be the only one to get hit, Yoo Jae-suk then asks around if any other staff members wants to hit a <Running Man> MC. Everyone says they’re fine except for VJ Seong-Oh who says he wanted to hit Gary, but he’s not here. (He was Gary’s old VJ) Aw.
Next Week: the trip continues with Black Pink
