Running Man Recap: Episode 337
Episode 337 – Haha’s Week: I Want to Know that Child – February 5, 2017
The episode starts off with a parody of <I Want to Know That> which is a long running crime show on SBS that deals with unsolved mysteries. Comedian Jung Sung-ho does a ridiculously good imitation of the show’s actual host Kim Sang-joong. He narrates that it’s the fifth member’s week and the protagonist is Haha.
The PD then meets with Haha at his office in Hapjeong District to find out what he wants to do for his episode. There’s so much he wants to do that it’s all jumbled up. Haha thinks about basketball, baseball, music, singing, Dokdo, coffee, competition, fighting, etc.
Comedian Jung Sung-ho narrates that Haha couldn’t come to a decision. They interview his “acquaintances” to see if he’s usually this indecisive. The interviewees are pixilated just like in <I Want to Know That> and their voices are changed as well. There are six interviewees including a pixilated Song Ji-hyo, Ji Suk-jin, Yoo Jae-suk, Lee Kwang-soo, Haha’s stylist, and Haha’s manager who all agree on how indecisive Haha is.
Comedian Jung Sung-ho then continues narrating that they must force Haha into a harsh situation in order to deal with his indecisiveness. Let’s watch.
Opening: Yes, You’ve Decided Race
The five MCs minus Haha are at Inje County for the show’s opening. The PD tells them that today’s race is titled the “Yes, You’ve Decided Race.” As soon as he tells them that, staff members put blindfolds on the cast members and take them away.
Yoo Jae-suk and Kim Jong-kook take off their blindfolds and find they’re on a bungee jumping platform. There are protests all around. Yoo Jae-suk yells, “Haha must be crazy!” Kim Jong-kook exclaims, “Why?!!!!”
Lee Kwang-soo and Ji Suk-jin have been taken to a ride that throws them straight up in the air 50 meters high. Ji Suk-jin yells, “No!” and says he’s going to go to the bathroom. Lee Kwang-soo just runs away, until he’s caught by the PD.
Song Ji-hyo finds herself in front of a box of worms? She scares herself into thinking they’re snakes.
Haha is waiting nearby at a playground. The PD gives him a cellphone and he checks video messages from each of his fellow cast members. There’s one from Ji Suk-jin yelling, “Haha, You know me. You know I’m serious. I really can’t ride this. I’m your hyung.” It’s followed by a video from Lee Kwang-soo saying, “I trust you hyung. I wasn’t going to say this, but Ji Suk-jin dissed our family.”
Yoo Jae-suk says in his video message, “Bungee jumping in this winter!??! This isn’t right. Save me Haha!” Kim Jong Kook is holding some cup ramen and soda and says, “You know that I hate this more than bungee jumping, save me.” Song Ji-hyo yells, “There are dozens of worms this big. Please!”
The PD says because Haha always has trouble making decisions, they’ve put the fates of his fellow cast members in his hands. They are in three different locations, and he has to decide who to save first.
Haha gets in a car and complains the whole way there about how he hates making decisions. He usually just goes with majority opinion since he’s just a peace-loving guy like Gandhi. Haha even hates choosing what to eat. He has a fear of Baskin Robbins because there’re just too many flavors. LOL. Where is he headed first?
Choice One: Yoo Jae-suk or Kim Jong Kook
Haha arrives at the bungee jumping place. Yoo Jae-suk and Kim Jong-kook are waiting 63 meters up in the sky. They see Haha on the ground and yell at him to save them, but Haha doesn’t know what he’s supposed to do to rescue them.
The PD then informs him he has five minutes to save just one person. Yoo Jae-suk who has to bungee jump or Kim Jong-kook who has to eat a high calorie lunch containing ramen, hamburger, fries, potato chips, cake, and a soda. I guess bungee jumping wasn’t scary enough for Kim Jong-kook, so the PD had to think of another fear for him.
This is the highest bungee jump in Korea, and if Haha doesn’t decide within five minutes, both Yoo Jae-suk and Kim Jong-kook have to face their punishments. It seems like a pretty easy no-brainer though right? Eating ramen and hamburger isn’t a punishment. It’s a reward!
Yoo Jae-suk yells at Jong-kook saying his punishment is nothing. Kim Jong-kook yells, “I think this ramen has 10,000 calories!!! All Jae-suk hyung has to do is jump.”
Haha yells out, “Jae-suk hyung, you’ve done a lot of jumping anyways.” Flashback to him doing a high dive and zipline on previous <Running Man> episodes.
There’s 15 seconds left. Haha chooses to save Yoo Jae-suk. Yay!
Kim Jong-kook screams out, “NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! You’re dead. I’m going to really hit you hard.” It’s been years since he’s had ramen. Yoo Jae-suk gets on his knees and thanks Haha.
Meanwhile, on the ground, Haha notes, “To Jong-kook hyung that’s like making him eat poison.” Yoo Jae-suk nonchalantly says that Kim Jong-kook secretly wanted to eat ramen, and just needed an excuse to eat it. Yoo Jae-suk adds, “Ramen is nothing. I eat it twice a week.”
The music from <Oldboy> plays as Kim Jong-kook forces himself to eat.
Choice Two: Ji Suk-jin or Lee Kwang-soo
Haha and Yoo Jae-suk then go to find Ji Suk-jin and Lee Kwang-soo.
Lee Kwang-soo threatens, “I haven’t done my members’ week yet, but Ji Suk-jin has. You want to be naked during my week? Pay attention to me.” Yoo Jae-suk says to Haha, “Don’t worry, I’ll make Kwang-soo go naked during my week.” Haha asks the two of them to list their fondest memory. Ji Suk-jin says it was when the two of them were in the mud pit. Whereas Kwang-soo just betrayed Haha all the time.
The ride is set up so that two people have to be on it. So whoever doesn’t get saved, has to ride it with his VJ. Ji Suk-jin’s VJ says to Haha, “Back when you opened your entrails restaurant, I went three times in one week.” That pretty much seals Kwang-soo’s fate.
Haha decides to save Ji Suk-jin (and his VJ.) Lee Kwang-soo protests that he even messaged Haha’s wife for leneiency, but he gets on the ride with his VJ. He asks his VJ why he didn’t go to Haha’s restaurant. Kwang-soo’s VJ replies, “I don’t like entrails.”
The ride goes straight up in the sky. Kwang-soo’s VJ looks to be even more scared. Poor guy. It’s not a crime to not like entrails. I don’t eat them either. It goes up and down multiple times.
Choice Three: Song Ji-hyo or KookKwang
Kim Jong-kook is done eating and he seems angry. What’s he going to do to Haha when he meets up with him? They all them go find Song Ji-hyo.
This time the choice is Song Ji-hyo and insects vs. KookKwang and punishment boxes. Why is the PD punishing Kim Jong-kook and Lee Kwang-soo again? Poor guys.
Haha has five minutes to choose who to save again. If she doesn’t get rescued, Song Ji-hyo has to put her hand in the insect box while Kim Jong-kook and Lee Kwang-soo have some mysterious punishment. Song Ji-hyo’s box approaches her bit by bit every minute. Song Ji-hyo looks genuinely creeped out, “Oppa! Save me! Augh! I love you.”
Haha chooses to save Song Ji-hyo. As soon as she hears her name, Song Ji-hyo runs away, but then trips and falls down. She must have been truly terrified. Poor Kim Jong-kook and Lee Kwang-soo have gotten left behind twice.
Choice Four: Who Gets Lunch?
Haha, Ji Suk-jin, Yoo Jae-suk, and Song Ji-hyo get in a car and drive away somewhere to eat lunch.
Meanwhile, Kim Jong-kook and Lee Kwang-soo take their faces out of their boxes to find that they’ve gotten girly clown makeup put on their faces.
Haha, Ji Suk-jin, Yoo Jae-suk, and Song Ji-hyo find a delicious Korean Table d’hote meal in front of them as well as a tiny table with a single triangle kimbap and yogurt. It’s time for Haha to make another choice. Either Haha eats the Korean Table d’hote meal or the other three do, while the others eat the triangle kimbap and yogurt.
The three have their back turned, facing the wall. They keep telling Haha they know he’s a good man. Then they turn around and see Haha sitting in front of the delicious Korean Table d’hote. They all start kicking Haha, until the PD tells Haha that he can choose one person to eat with him. Now they all start praising him. LOL.
Haha asks who wants to eat the kimbap. Yoo Jae-suk raises his hand thinking it’s a trick question. It’s not. Haha sends him to the kimbap table. Now it’s down to Ji Suk-jin and Song Ji-hyo. Ji Suk-jin tells a sob story about how when he was little, his mother used to hit him with a triangle ruler, so he has a trauma regarding triangles. Yoo Jae-suk starts eating the kimbab, not realizing that he needs to split it with whoever Haha doesn’t pick.
Haha tells the two to close their eyes, and he’ll feed the winner some fried fish. He gives it to Song Ji-hyo while Yoo Jae-suk sticks his finger in Suk-jin’s mouth.
Meanwhile, Kim Jong-kook and Lee Kwang-soo arrive at a picnic mat on the floor outside to find two frozen water bottles and military canisters with baked potatoes inside. Lee Kwang-soo comments that it’s -17° Celsius outside. They wonder if they’re in the middle of a war. The potatoes are delicious though.
The final mission takes place at the famous artificial waterfall in Inje. Song Ji-hyo notices that there’s a Running Man flag stuck in a frozen pond. They watch a video from Kim Jong-kook and Lee Kwang-soo who say they’ll show them what true revenge is. Jong-kook says, “You have five minutes to run away.”
The PD tells them the rules for the next game. Haha has to finish a mission before his name tag gets ripped off. He has to get five baskets in with his eyes closed. The other rescued members have to do challenges to help him extend the time he has to shoot baskets. If he fails to get five baskets before Kim Jong-kook and Lee Kwang-soo rip off his name tag, Haha plus the three rescued members need to do the bungee jump.
There are three courses.
- Round 1 – Betrayal Rocks-Paper-Scissors – Ji Suk-jin
- Round 2 – Hot! Cold! Eat Quickly – Yoo Jae-suk & Ji Suk-in
- Round 3 – Ice Floor Flip the Tag – Song Ji-hyo
It’s a battle between the members who got rescued and the ones who didn’t. Haha does some practices with his eyes open, but can’t manage to get any in. This isn’t going to be easy.
At this point Kim Jong-kook and Lee Kwang-soo walk in. They encounter Ji Suk-jin first who trembles and says, “I didn’t do anything wrong.” It’s true though. He was just a passive standerby and it was Haha who failed to rescue them. The unrescued team has to beat Ji Suk-jin three times in a row at rocks-paper-scissors.
They start playing. Haha starts shooting baskets too. Kwang-soo gets two wins in a row. The unrescued team just needs one more. They win! That was super fast. Ji Suk-jin sure is unlucky.
Kim Jong-kook, Lee Kwang-soo, and Ji Suk-jin then run over to where Yoo Jae-suk is for the round 2 minigame. So far, Haha’s gotten one basket in. They have to eat sweet potatoes and melon popsicles as fast as possible. It’s a race between the KookKwang team and the Yoo&Ji team to see who finishes eating first. Kim Jong-kook grabs the sweet potatoes, so that he doesn’t have to eat the popsicles. Haha gets a second basket.
It seems like the popscicles are harder to eat, especially since it’s so cold out. Kim Jong-kook wants some water, so Kwang-soo gives him some snow. Pft. The Kim Jong-kook and Lee Kwang-soo team finishes eating first. They head over to Song Ji-hyo. Haha gets a third basket. And a fourth!
Song Ji-hyo and the KookKwang team take turns trying to flip a tag over by hitting it with another one. Kim Jong-kook manages to flip his over first. Now they just have to rip off Haha’s name tag. Kim Jong-kook and Lee Kwang-soo run over to where Haha is. Kwang-soo rips Haha’s name tag off.
Haha fails his mission. Oh no! So he along with Song Ji-hyo, Yoo Jae-suk, and Ji Suk-jin have to do a bungee jump.
Haha’s Final Choice
All of the cast members travel back to the bungee jump station. The PD tells Haha that he has one more choice to make. He can choose to do the penalty himself or make the other three do it. He must choose within five minutes, or else all four of them will have to do it.
Yoo Jae-suk says he’s surprisingly never done a bungee jump. I thought he would have done one on a variety show but he says he almost did on <Infinite Challenge>, but he ended up not doing it.
Haha chooses all four of them to do it. Haha laments, “I should have just done a blind date too.” Actually, he then changes his mind and says he’ll do it by himself. How brave! He looks teary eyed. The three thank him.
Haha gets on the elevator of doom.
Haha gets out on the platform while the PD countdowns. 5 . . . 4 . . . 3 . . . 2 . . . The PD suddenly stops then tells him to open and look inside a side door before he jumps. Haha finds a cake and a tablet PC. The cast members recorded a video saying thank you and congratulations on the pregnancy for his second child, So-eul.
Flashback the planning meeting where Haha talked with the PD about his member’s week. He said he wanted a twist ending.
It turns out the everything was staged after the point where Kim Jong-kook and Lee Kwang-soo ate potatoes in the cold. The two of them along with Yoo Jae-suk, Ji Suk-jin, and Song Ji-hyo plotted to make Haha lose his final mission so that he would have to do the bungee jump. Ah! So that’s why they won the minigames so easily.
The elevator goes back down and Haha walks back with his cake to meet up with his cast members. They congratulate him for making the right choice (choosing to do the bungee jump by himself), but Haha runs away in embarrassment. They each brought presents like baby toys and a fruit basket for his pregnant wife and baby. Haha says, “We definitely are 7012.”
He sends a video message to his wife who’s currently in her third trimester and tells her how much he loves her and their baby and to be healthy during the pregnancy and birth.
This week has been another legendary episode in terms of the concept and execution. It’s a shame though that the ratings haven’t been reflective of that. I wonder why more Koreans aren’t watching <Running Man>!?!?
I hope the cast and staff members aren’t too upset about the ratings.
Next Week: a special present for the hardworking cast
