Running Man Recap: Episode 338

Episode 338 – Break Week – February 12, 2017

This week is a break from members’ week which means that today’s episode isn’t going to a focus on a particular cast member.

Opening: Don’t Run, Walk.

Today’s race takes place at a large sauna. The PD says it’s a nice, warm break for them since they’ve been spending the past few weeks running outside in the cold.

The title of today’s race is “Don’t Run, Walk.” I really like how they incorporated the show’s catchphrase in today’s race. The PD then tells them to go change into sauna clothes. The MCs complain that he should have told them before their stylists put in all their hard work to pick out their outfits. While the others go to change, Lee Kwang-soo, Haha, and Song Ji-hyo can’t resist doing a mini fashion show. After all, their stylists did go through all that trouble. Song Ji-hyo shows off her guns, and Lee Kwang-soo makes fun of her for being so unladylike.

While they’re changing in the locker rooms, the MCs wonder why they’re still being filmed. Is there a mission coming up? The locker room is huge, and everyone’s lockers are spaced out far away from each others. Lee Kwang-soo and Yoo Jae-suk find a mission card in their lockers.

It reads, “Yoo Jae-suk and Lee Kwang-soo are today’s sauna thieves. The two need to steal the other cast members’ clothes without getting caught. The one to steal the most clothes by weight wins.” The captions add that if the two reveal their identities, they will get twice the punishment.

Yoo Jae-suk and Lee Kwang-soo stare each other down. It’s intelligent Yoo Jae-suk versus the speedy Lee Kwang-soo. Who will win today?

The sauna is one of those huge multiplexes with a snack bar and even a mini water park. It looks pretty awesome. The five guys get out first and wait in the main hall for Song Ji-hyo. Kim Jong-kook asks why Song Ji-hyo is taking so long, “She doesn’t have a mission right? She’s just taking a long time to change?” Ji Suk-jin suggests that they scold at her, but the other MCs remind him that Song Ji-hyo wouldn’t be scared of his yelling anyways.

Song Ji-hyo then starts walking over and Lee Kwang-soo yells, “Run! Run! Run!” Ji Suk-jin yells too, “Run! I said to run! What time is it? Why are you late?” Song Ji-hyo responds leisurely, “I had to change.” The other MCs then start to back her up saying, “It sometimes takes a long time to change.” Poor Ji Suk-jin. Nobody ever takes him seriously.

The PD then tells the cast members to hand over their cellphones and locker room keys and places them on an easel. Kwang-soo eyes the locker room keys since he needs them to steal clothes.

Today’s schedule includes five courses, and with each course, the MC who “rests” the best gets “rest mileage points” to exchange for snacks or prizes such as

  • cup ramen – 3 points
  • snack – 3 points
  • ice cream – 5 points
  • domestic flight ticket – 80 points
  • South East Asia flight ticket – 90 points
  • Europe flight ticket – 100 points

The episode ends when they finish all five courses.

  • Course 1: Savannah
  • Course 2: Hawaii
  • Special Course: Jeju Island
  • Course 3: Santorini
  • Course 4: ???
Course 1: Savannah

The cast members then head to Course 1 which is the “Savannah.” It takes place a hot sauna room set at 64° Celsius. The PD tells them to enjoy the warm resting spot. They’ll be also given lunch in the Savannah. The one to endure and stay in the sauna room the longest gets the most mileage points.

First, the staff brings out some hot coffee and hot corn soup. They can leave the room only after they finish eating it. Lee Kwang-soo and Yoo Jae-suk glance at each other. Yoo Jae-suk quickly sips his soup and almost burns his tongue. It must be super hot, but he needs to finish it quickly, so Yoo Jae-suk tells Ji Suk-jin there’s something behind him and dumps some of his soup into Suk-jin’s bowl while he’s looking away. Lee Kwang-soo gets up to eat, and the rest are like “What are you doing?” Kim Jong-kook wonders, “Isn’t it better to eat slowly? Why’s everyone trying to eat so quickly?”

Kwang-soo then pours his coffee into his empty soup bowl to get it to cool down faster. Haha gets suspicious. He asks, “Is there something going on? There’s even a giraffe picture on the wall.” Yoo Jae-suk starts screaming, “There is a giraffe picture. There must be something here!!!” LOL at that random coincidence implicating poor Lee Kwang-soo.

Yoo Jae-suk finishes his food first and gets up to leave, but Lee Kwang-soo blocks the doorway. Yoo Jae-suk sneakily says, “See, there is something. He keeps blocking me.” Haha takes this opportunity to dump some of his coffee in Lee Kwang-soo’s bowl, and Yoo Jae-suk uses that distraction to escape.

Yoo Jae-suk then runs to the easel in the main hallway where everyone had left their locker keys. He takes a moment to think about whose clothes are heaviest and goes for Ji Suk-jin’s keys. Jae-suk then heads down to the locker room, takes Suk-jin’s clothes, and drops them off at the check in desk. That’s one down for Yoo Jae-suk.

Back in the sauna room, the others wonder why Kwang-soo tried to block Jae-suk. Yoo Jae-suk then nonchalantly walks back in saying, “There was nothing to do outside.”

Next, the PD gives them some spicy chicken feet. Lee Kwang-soo asks for some water and tries to leave the sauna room, but Yoo Jae-suk blocks him. Haha thinks aloud, “Maybe Jae-suk and Kwang-soo have some mission together.” Ji Suk-jin follows Lee Kwang-soo outside, suspicious.

Lee Kwang-soo makes it outside without Suk-jin following him, and steals Haha’s locker room keys. Meanwhile, the others get served some spicy chicken ramen. Kim Jong-kook leaves the room. There’s no way he’s eating that. It’s just Haha and Song Ji-hyo left. Just then, they are told to put on winter jackets. Haha throws his jacket on the floor in frustration and leaves. Song Ji-hyo is the last one remaining. Song Ji-hyo wins course one.

Meanwhile, Lee Kwang-soo succeeds in stealing Haha’s clothes and dropping them off at the check in desk. We find out that Haha’s clothes weigh 2.2 kg while Ji Suk-jin’s weigh 2.6 kg. So far, Yoo Jae-suk is in the lead.

Lee Kwang-soo returns to find the others who then keep questioning Kwang-soo. Especially about why he blocked Yoo Jae-suk. Yoo Jae-suk calls Kwang-soo into a cold sauna room to talk. Um . . . that’s not obvious at all. Haha ponders, “They took our cellphones and locker room keys.” Kim Jong-kook adds, “There are a lot of cameras pointed at the cellphones and locker room keys. There must be something going on there.”

Haha asks Kim Jong-kook to go check it out. Yoo Jae-suk uses this time to go steal another set of clothes. Lee Kwang-soo notices that Jae-suk is missing and chases after him. They have a tussle on the stairs going down to the locker room, and agree to a truce. But as soon as Yoo Jae-suk complies, Lee Kwang-soo tries to make a run for the locker room. Yoo Jae-suk punches him and takes Song Ji-hyo’s key while Lee Kwang-soo grabs Kim Jong-kook’s key.

Haha looks around the locker room trying to figure out what’s going on. Haha then notices Lee Kwang-soo who tries to hide his stolen clothes in a laundry basket as he sees Haha headed his way. Kwang-soo then grabs the clothes and makes a run for it. Haha yells at Yoo Jae-suk that he thinks Kwang-soo’s doing something to their belongings. Yoo Jae-suk sees Kwang-soo running and collapses in laughter at how obvious he is.

Lee Kwang-soo manages to get 1.1 kg of clothes from Kim Jong-kook’s locker. Haha then catches up with Lee Kwang-soo saying he’s a terrible thief.

Lee Kwang-soo runs out to another hallway and tells the cameras that he’s failed. He’ll try to work harder during his member’s week. Kwang-soo lies on floor in agony, while Kim Jong-kook just laughs and takes a selfie.

Special Course: Jeju Island

The next course is a “lying down broadcast” popularized by Lee Kyung-kyu. The last one to take his or her back off the floor wins the most mileage points. While lying down in a rest area, the MCs listen to some sounds of waves as if they really were in Jeju Island. Then, suddenly a Red Velvet’s song plays.

Four of the Red Velvet members show up and start dancing in from of the Running Man MCs. (Joy is too busy filming for the drama <The Liar and His Lover>.) The MCs all want to watch, but they can’t take their backs off the floor. Yoo Jae-suk rolls over pretending to be too excited over the girl group. The PD calls, “Yoo Jae-suk OUT.” Lee Kwang-soo does the same. Neither actually have an incentive to stay in a sleeping position.

The PD then tells them that they will be doing an “Olle Trail Walking Couple Bracelet Race.” The four Red Velvet members will take turns doing charades for a well known Korean proverb. The <Running Man> MC to guess each proverb will be paired up with that Red Velvet member.

There’s a flashback to when Red Velvet was on the show back in 2015. Lee Kwang-soo had a lot of lovey dovey couple moments with Joy back then. They ask if he misses her, but Lee Kwang-soo says he doesn’t like her anymore. In fact, he found out that she’s actually married. (He’s referring to her stint on <We Got Married.>)

Keep in mind, the Running Man MCs can’t take their backs off the floor, or else they will be disqualified from the charades pairing game. Irene is up first. She taps on her back and tries to mime a turtle shell. Yoo Jae-suk rolls off the floor yelling, “I know the answer!” The PD says he’s disqualified since he took his back off the floor. Haha then guesses correctly, “자라 보고 놀란 가슴 솥뚜껑 보고 놀란다 / Once bitten, twice shy.”

Next is Wendy. Song Ji-hyo says, “고래 싸움에 새우 등 터진다 / When whales fight, shrimps get hurt.”

Yeri’s is up third. Kwang-soo guesses, “똥 묻은 개가 겨 묻은 개를 나무란다 / The pot calling the kettle black.”

Seulgi is the last Red Velvet member to do charades. Kim Jong-kook says, “호랑이는 죽어서 가죽을 남기고 사람은 죽어서 이름을 남긴다 / When tigers die, they leave their skins. When people die their leave their names.”

That leaves Yoo Jae-suk and Ji Suk-jin as partners since they weren’t able to guess any proverbs correctly.

The teams are

  • Haha & Irene
  • Lee Kwang-soo & Yeri
  • Song Ji-hyo & Wendy
  • Kim Jong-kook & Seulgi
  • Jae-suk & Suk-jin

Now, it’s time for the “Olle Trail Walking Couple Bracelet Race.” The goal of the game is to rip off the other couples’ bracelets. There’s no running allowed. Only walking. Also, teams will be automatically eliminated after two warnings for running. Btw, only Song Ji-hyo’s clothes are left for Yoo Jae-suk and Lee Kwang-soo’s secret mission.

As soon as the game starts, Lee Kwang-soo and Yeri head downstairs towards the lockers. Haha and Song Ji-hyo chase Kwang-soo and corner him. He complains that he’s not doing anything worthy of suspicion.

Kim Jong-kook plans to go for the male team first, and Yoo Jae-suk uses this as an opportunity to “hide” in the locker room. He and Ji Suk-jin head for the elevator to the locker room, but it opens with Kim Jong-kook and Seulgi already inside. The two teams are flustered, and Yeri uses this chance  as a sneak attack to rip off the male team’s bracelet. Yoo Jae-suk and Ji Suk-jin out!

Then the remaining three teams face off against each other. It’s a free-for-all. Irene grabs Kim Jong-kook and Seulgi’s bracelet off. Next, she gets Lee Kwang-soo and Yeri’s bracelet. Irene is a beast and even manages to get Song Ji-hyo and Wendy’s bracelet.

The winners, Haha and Irene, get 30 mileage points.

That’s it for Red Velvet’s guest appearance, so while the camera crew cleans up and reorganizes, everyone says goodbye to Red Velvet. The girl group members hand out signed CDs, and Yoo Jae-suk asks to go to the bathroom.

I’m shocked at how young they are. Yeri says she was born in 1999, and Ji Suk-jin is like, “I got married in 1999.” LOL.

Lee Kwang-soo then notices that Yoo Jae-suk is missing and goes to chase after him. Jae-suk is already in the women’s locker room though, and makes it to the check in desk before Kwang-soo catches him. Kwang-soo runs down the stairs, just as Jae-suk gets in the elevator and heads upstairs.

Course 3: Santorini

The next course takes place in another sauna room, but luckily this one isn’t as hot as the first one. The PD says they will get a siesta time just like the people in Santorini. For this course, the last one to open his or her eyes gets mileage points. The MCs “let” Lee Kwang-soo lie down at the end, so that he can have a “break” and work on his secret mission in peace. How nice of them.

While everyone’s lying down with their eyes closed, Lee Kwang-soo sneaks out and runs to the lockers. They others call for Kwang-soo, but he doesn’t respond. Song Ji-hyo’s not surprised. They know that he’s up to something, they just don’t know what exactly yet.

Lee Kwang-soo checks Ji-hyo’s locker to find that it’s empty. Yoo Jae-suk already got her clothes, so Kwang-soo dejectedly returns to the sauna. Haha feels around feels Kwang-soo next to him. He sarcastically says, “Oh Kwang-soo is back.” Lee Kwang-soo pretends to snore like he was there the whole time. It doesn’t work though and Kwang-soo sighs, “I failed.”

The PD then tries various antics to get the MCs to open their eyes. Lee Kwang-soo helps by yelling out, “Oh!” Yoo Jae-suk opens his eye wondering what’s going on, and just finds a staff member holding up a sign, “Disqualified!” LOL.

Since he’s already out of the game, Yoo Jae-suk then tries to get the others to open their eyes, He harasses Ji Suk-jin and takes out money from his wallet. Lee Kwang-soo attacks Yoo Jae-suk in frustration. The PD yells out, “You can’t touch that.” He’s trying his best to get the other MCs to open their eyes. Yoo Jae-suk then poors water on Ji Suk-jin’s face who opens his eyes in shock. Haha looks at what’s going on. Song Ji-hyo tries to sneak look too, but of course everyone notices her opening her eyes ever so slightly. Kim Jong-kook wins this round.

Course 4: ???

This is the last course of the day. The PD tells them to first change back to their own clothes, and they can then go home after this mission. As he walks to the locker room to go change, Kim Jong-kook says dryly, “We’re going to be shocked. Look at all the cameras following us.”

Ji Suk-jin notices his clothes are gone. Kim Jong-kook finds his clothes gone too and says sarcastically, “Oh what is this? Oh no~” Instead of their clothes, there’s a mission card in everyone’s locker.

The card says, “You have 15 minutes to rip off the name tag of the clothing thief. If you fail, you have to wear the sauna clothes when you go home.”

Yoo Jae-suk pretends to be shocked, but Kwang-soo know that his jig is up. Everyone runs to chase Kwang-soo down, but the PD stops them and says that the race hasn’t started yet. Lee Kwang-soo needs time to run and hide. Meanwhile, Yoo Jae-suk isn’t a suspect, so he pretends to collude with everyone else saying, “You all know who the thief is, right?” Sneaky. Sneaky. Everyone minus Kwang-soo huddles while they wait for the race to start.

Lee Kwang-soo runs to look for some place to hide, “I just have to endure 15 minutes.”

The PD starts the countdown. 5 . . . 4 . . . 3 . . . 2 . . . 1 . . .  The race starts.

It’s hilarious how Yoo Jae-suk just follows everyone along pretending to chase down Kwang-soo with them. They head to the water park portion. Lee Kwang-soo is hiding inside a water slide. Kim Jong-kook eyes the slides and wonders if Kwang-soo is inside. Haha heads to the slide as well. Lee Kwang-soo yells at his camera man, “Turn off the flash! You want to die together?”

Haha notices the light inside the dark water slide and calls for Kim Jong-kook to help. Yoo Jae-suk tries to walk away, but Kim Jong-kook calls his name!?! Oh, he just wants him to help catch Lee Kwang-soo and wait at the bottom of the slide.

Lee Kwang-soo is in the dark. Kim Jong-kook heads down the slide while he orders Haha to wait on the bottom. Lee Kwang-soo knows that Kim Jong-kook is walking down the slide and just barely manages to escape down the slide since Yoo Jae-suk isn’t waiting on the bottom as Kim Jong-kook had told him to do.

Song Ji-hyo then finds Kwang-soo in the lazy pool and yells out for others to help. He must be so cold hiding in the water. Since time is ticking, she can’t wait for the others to run over, and Song Ji-hyo bravely jumps into the water by herself. A minute later, Kim Jong-kook jumps in the other end of the lazy pool and the two rip off Kwang-soo’s name tag. Yay!

But wait! The PD tells them that the race isn’t over yet.  There’s another thief they need to catch, and there are only five minutes left.

Yoo Jae-suk has run off to the locker room and put his own clothes back on. He then runs away to find a place to hide. Lee Kwang-soo cheers the four MCs on, “We are Running Man! Be strong!!!”

Yoo Jae-suk hides under some mattresses. It works pretty well because Kim Jong-kook walks right past him. There are just 2 minutes left. Then, Kim Jong-kook notices VJ Kwon-ryeol eating in the food court. (VJ Kwon-ryeol is Yoo Jae-suk’s personal cameraman.) Kim Jong-kook asks, “What are you doing here eating?” and thinks Yoo Jae-suk must be nearby. Ironically, VJ Kwon-ryeol is just there eating and taking a break.

Ji Suk-jin then stumbles across the mattresses and starts jumping on them. He notices a hat sticking out and spots Yoo Jae-suk, Ji SUk-jin yells to the other cast members, “He’s here!” Haha and Song Ji-hyo come running. There are just 30 seconds left. Can Yoo Jae-suk last that long?

The 15 minutes are up. Grasshopper wins!

Lee Kwang-soo then walks over in his wet clothes and kicks Yoo Jae-suk. Aw. Don’t be such a sore loser Kwang-soo.

That’s the end of Course 4.

The PD announces that the winner of today’s episode is Song Ji-hyo who gets a ticket to Southeast Asia. She had gotten 1st place in course one, 2nd place in course two, and 2nd place in course three.

The PD also announces that the Hidden Mission winner is Yoo Jae-suk. The PD simply says, “Congratulations!” Yoo Jae-suk asks incredulously,”That’s it?” Buhahaha. He doesn’t get anything for his win.

The PD returns just the clothes that Lee Kwang-soo stole. Since they didn’t catch Yoo Jae-suk, Ji Suk-jin and Song Ji-hyo have to go home in sauna clothes. Also, Lee Kwang-soo has to go home in a chicken outfit since he failed his mission. There’s a hilarious flashback to last year when Lee Kwang-soo had to wear monkey clothes. (2017 is the year of the chicken while 2016 was the year of the monkey).

The episode ends with Lee Kwang-soo in his chicken suit and Ji Suk-jin and Song Ji-hyo accompanying him. Ji Suk-jin and Song Ji-hyo must be freezing in their T-shirts. Lee Kwang-soo takes off chicken and gives them out to people on the street as they walk to the closest subway station. They three of them tell the cameras, “Good luck in the New Year” and Song Ji-hyo apologizes for Lee Kwang-soo and says they won’t steal anymore.

Yay for another enjoyable episode. I was worried because I heard there would be guests on this week’s show, but it was still good. I liked how Yoo Jae-suk went through all that trouble, but got nothing but a congratulations from the PD. LOL at that plot twist.

My only complaint is that I wish the PD had kept better track of the mileage points. In recent episodes, the PD keeps introducing concepts and giving up on them midway through the show because they don’t work out as well as planned. It’s quite frustrating watching that happen so often, so I wish they would do a better job preparing the details of their episode concepts.

Next Week: Yoo Jae-suk and friends
