Running Man Recap: Episode 346

Episode 346: Running Mate Global Project: April 16, 2017
Opening: Jeon So-min and Yang Se-chan’s Introduction

Today’s episode opens with a notice about the “2017 Running Man Global Project.” It’s followed by a montage of the world’s most dangerous tourist attractions. There’s the Shark Cage in the US, Cage of Death in Australia, Fly Toledo in Spain, Mount Bromo Volcano in Indonesia, the Super Scary Labyrinth of Fear in Japan, Nevis Swing in New Zealand, and Insano Water Slide in Brazil.

Cut to a parking lot. It’s the first official day with the new cast members. I’m really happy about the new members because hopefully  it means the higher ups are investing a bit more into the show.

Jeon So-min is the first to arrive. She walks around the parking lot and notices a couple of huge set pieces covered up with some tarp. She wonders why there’s no one else here yet and walks into a container box that’s set up as a waiting area. The PD then welcomes Jeon So-min to the show and gives her a lei. She backs away, scared of the lei. She’s suspicious of all the juice and snacks on the coffee table. She says she heard a lot about the PDs being bullies. Yang Se-chan then walks into the container box and says hello.

He and Jeon So-min seem close already. Maybe it’s because they are on the “Insolent Housemates” show together. Also, they’re both born in 1986, making them just one year younger than former maknae Kwang-soo. The two have been all over the news, because of Running Man, and Jeon So-min good naturally jokes that the two kept coming up on search engines so often that she thought they had a dating scandal.

Jeon So-min continues to be suspicious of the PDs, she even thought the lei would give her an electric shock. Yang Se-chan is like, “You watch too many American shows.” . . .Um yeah . . . cause you know Korean shows don’t do wacky stuff like that right? Jeon So-min orders Yang Se-chan to try some of the snacks first in case it’s a trap.

The original cast members then arrive together in the parking lot. The PD tells them about a global race, which they came up with to encourage them to run more. The PD asks if they heard about the new cast members, and of course they have! It’s been all over the news. Kim Jong-kook yells out, “9012!!” and Lee Kwang-soo yells out, “The nine of us are one. I was nine from the moment I was born!!!”

The cast then calls for Jeon So-min and Yang Se-chan to come out, but they can’t exit the container box. The two are stuck inside as a crane lifts up the box. It’s a frightening sight as Jeon So-min and Yang Se-chan look out the window to see that they’ve been pulled up 15 meters into the air. Yang Se-chan yells, “Save me!”

The PDs then take the tarp off a second set piece to reveal a water bomb setup. There are two ways to let the two team members down. They can either climb down using a rope ladder or they can be let down 3 meters for each original member that takes a water bomb for them. Song Ji-hyo chirps, “That’s nothing! Of course we can do that much for them!” but then the PD continues explaining that the decision isn’t up to them. The new cast members get to choose whether to climb down or have their fellow cast members water bombed and who to bomb too.

As soon as they hear that, the two new members yell at the original members to take a hit for them, while the original cast members yell at them to just climb down. Yang Se-chan then gets busy bossing everyone around because the decision of who to bomb is in his hands. He tells Lee Kwang-soo to dance and Kim Jong-kook to do an acrostic poem with Jeon So-min’s name. Kim Jong-kook doesn’t do it and just responds, “I’ll get hit with the water, but you’ll get hit with my fist.” 😯 Jeon So-min asks Yoo Jae-suk for a balloon man dance. Haha does a bit of brown nosing, saying he likes Yang Se-chan better than his brother Yang Se-hyung. Jeon So-min gives Song Ji-hyo a free pass . . . because she’s Song Ji-hyo. That leaves Ji Suk-jin.

Ji Suk-jin takes the first water bomb of the day, and the container box goes down 3 meters. Now, there’s just 12 meters to go!

The PD then asks Jeon So-min and Yang Se-chan for their second choice. Of course they choose the bomb again . . . but the question is who? Jeon So-min thanks Haha for buying her some Korean BBQ, and then chooses Haha. She says she picked him because they aren’t very close, so she went for him. Haha replies, “But you aren’t close with anyone here!” Good point.

For their third choice, Jeon So-min and Yang Se-chan decide to bomb Kim Jong-kook, but then Lee Kwang-soo starts whining, thinking that they picked him. Jeon So-min and Yang Se-chan tease Kwang-soo asking if they should change their decision. Lee Kwang-soo doesn’t know who’s getting bombed so he agonizes over whether or not to make them change their selection. Eventually, he asks for them to “Change!” and they change their target from Kim Jong-kook to Lee Kwang-soo. What poor luck.

Since they’re running out of time, Jeon So-min and Yang Se-chan bomb the forth and final cast mates at the same time. They choose Lee Kwang-soo and Kim Jong-kook.

Jeon So-min and Yang Se-chan finally reach the ground and join their cast mates. Of course they aren’t happy to see then, and the guys grab the two cast members and hold them under the water bombs, although only Yang Se-chan gets hit with the bomb. They go easy on Jeon So-min.

They regroup to conclude today’s opening mission. Kim Jong-kook notes that he’s the one who recommended Yang Se-chan to the PDs. Yoo Jae-suk says they’re starting anew from this moment. Haha says it’s an important time for the show, and if they fail it’s these two’s fault. He’s joking, but unfortunately this is what a lot of viewers are thinking as well.

The PD then tells them about the upcoming global race. It’s spring and lots of people go on overseas trips now, so this is the perfect time to go travelling. He tells them about Hawaii, which the cast members get excited about, but then scary music comes on as the PD shows them a video clip of all the scary tourist attractions mentioned in the beginning of this show. There’s a shark cage, alligator cage, etc. Ji Suk-jin really hates the haunted house. The Navis Swing looks the most terrifying to me. The video clip ends with the words, “The end,” and Kim Jong-kook retorts, “Does that mean it’s the end of the clip or end of us?”

This will be part of a three episode race. At the end of each episode, the losers will get a “Yay! Tourist Attraction” sticker. Those who end up with three stickers will have to go on one of the scary attractions. Also, for today’s episode there are six briefcases. Two with a travel exemption card, two with a travel alone card, and two with a travel with a partner card. They’ll be eliminating briefcases throughout today’s filming and the final loser will pick up the remaining briefcase to determine how many people will be given “Yay! Tourist Attraction” stickers today.

The two new cast members get to pick two briefcases to get rid of. Jeon So-min chooses #3 which is the travel alone car, while Yang Se-chan goes for #4 which was travel exemption card.

They then get on a bus to move to next location. Right after they sit down, the PD asks if they want to change seats? Why? Well the PD says they’ll be doing something while travelling. Everyone scrambles to sit in the back, but ultimately Lee Kwang-soo sits next to Jeon So-min. The others tease that he likes her which he quickly denies. Is this the start of a new Monday Couple? Maybe not because the two quickly start bickering saying neither are each other’s type.

Non Sequitur Quiz: Dangerous Opponent

After everyone has chosen their new seats, the PD then announces that they’ll be playing in two teams for the first mission of the day. Those sitting on the left side are one one team, while the ones sitting on the right are the other team. The teams are

Jeon So-min, Lee Kwang-soo, Yang Se-chan, Yoo Jae-suk

Kim Jong-kook, Haha, Song Ji-hyo, Ji Seok-jin

The PD will ask them a question, and they have to immediately respond with something that doesn’t make sense. Each person will be given one chance, and they have to fail to respond to three questions in a row to pass. The team with the most players to pass wins.

Ji Suk-jin volunteers first. PD: What did you do when you got up today?   JSJ: Lion   PD: What are you doing now?   JSJ: What? Fail!

Next up is Song Ji-hyo. PD: What do you have in your fridge?   SJH: I’m hungry.   PD: What’s your wish?   SJH: I’m sleepy.   PD: What are you doing now?  SJH: I want to sleep. Ding!

Haha’s turn. PD: Which cast member do you like best?   HH: Give me a raise.   PD: What’s in your phone background?   HH: It’s ruined.   PD: What do you want from me?   HH: I just had my second kid. Success!

Kim Jong-kook is next. PD: What’s your life motto?   KJK: The weather is really nice.   PD: What do you want to say now?   KJK: When are you going to introduce me to a woman? Fail!

Of course they’re not one to let that go and the others as if he’s sincere about the last repose. Kim Jong-kook replies, “Yes, I am.” I guess things didn’t work out with So young from his blind date a couple months back. Lee Kwang-soo jokes that he likes women who are tan and have thick thighs like Hyorin. Kim Jong-kook says he doesn’t care about looks.

It’s time for Yoo Jae-suk’s team.

The grasshopper goes up first. PD: Who’s your role model?   YJK: Poop! Epis fail!

Yang Se-chan is next. PD: Where are you itchy now?   YSC: My knee hurts.   PD: What’s your nickname? YSC: Strawberry. Fail! Haha complain he’s the same as his older brother. They’re both talk about how good he is a playing games. Yang Se-chan yells out, “Don’t look down on my brother. He’s good at games!!!”

Lee Kwang-soo’s turn. PD: What you want to say to your girlfriend when you get one?   LKW: Australopithecus. Fail!

Jeon So-min needs to pass for their team to at least tie. PD: What are you looking at now? JSM: Apple. Fail!!!

Everyone on Ji Suk-jin’s team gets one point while everyone on Yoo Jae-suk’s team is at -1 points.

The PD says they can challenge each other to trade points. Lee Kwang-soo decides to battle Haha and wins. Lee Kwang-soo gains a point, and Haha loses one.

Unanimous OX Quiz: Dangerous Room Next Door

The crew then arrives at the SBS Prism Tower.

There’s a conveyor belt set piece and the PD tells them each to take a seat and put on slippers with an O on one side and an X on the other. The PD says will ask them a yes or no question, and they’ll hold up the foot with the corresponding answer. The number of minority votes determines the number of players who get pulled through the converyer belt into a room at the end. They’ll be a punishment or a prize inside, but they won’t know what’s there until they get pulled in. Also, for those who don’t get pulled inside, they can listen to the reaction sounds of the ones who get pulled in and decide whether or not they want to join them.

Q1: I had my first kiss before I was 20.

Everyone says yes except Ji Suk-jin and Jeon So-min. That means two people get pulled into the room. Jeon So-min and Yoo Jae-suk are sitting closes to the end, so they get pulled in and start screaming. The others guess it’s a punishment inside, so no one wants to go. Jeon So-min then yells out, “Oh how tasty, the buckwheat noodles here are great.” No one falls for it though. The conveyor belt then pushes Jeon SO-min and Yoo Jae-suk back to the set and reveals that they’ve got laundry clips put on their faces. Ouch!

Yoo  Jae-suk says his first kiss was during his last year of high school during winter break. Haha says he was a kiss maniac. Yang Se-chan says he had his first kiss during his first year of high school. He was a kiss maniac too. Lee Kwang-soo says he was three years old, then admits his first real kiss was during his second year of middle school. It was at home with an older woman. Jeon So-min’s first kiss was when she was 21 years old, at a bus stop. They guy just suddenly kissed her. It was short. She said she heard that people hear bells ringing during their first kiss, but she only remembers smell of spit.

Jeon So-min switches to the middle and Ji Suk-jin to the end before the second question.

Q2: When I date, I usually am the one to get dumped.

It’s 50-50. Haha, Lee Kwang-soo, Yoo Jae-suk, and Ji Suk-jin hold up the X slipper. Ji Suk-jin, Yoo Jae-suk, Lee Kwang-soo, and Jeon So-min get pulled it and start screaming loudly. Yang Se-chan thinks they’re just tricking them with the yelling and decides he wants to join them. It’s a good decision because it turns out this time they each got a bucket of fried chicken. Yum!

Yoo Jae-suk notes that Lee Kwang-soo sprisingly replied no. There’s no way that’s true. Lee Kwang-soo says he was never technically dumped. His girlfriend cheated on him, so he dumped her. Jeon So-min says, “Wait a minutes, doesn’t that just mean you got dumped?”

Jeon So-min had replied “O” and says she’s dated three guys. She got dumped by two of them. The third guy cheated on her, but she clung on to him, begging for him not to leave her. She later dumped him though. Um . . . isn’t that the same as getting dumped? That’s what she just said to Kwang-soo ten seconds ago. Jeon So-min that yells at the camera, “Don’t you call me!” Everyone’s like “Who are you talking to? Did you date the camera man?” Lee Kwang-soo yells to his ex, “Please give me another chance!!!”

Q3: I am in the top three in terms of looks out of the Running man Cast members.

Everyone replies yes, so no one gets pulled into the punishment/reward room .

Lee Kwang-soo says Song Ji-hyo is first place and he’s second. Yoo Jae-suk puts Song Jo-hyo in first and himself at second too. The guys grab his collor for his ridiculousness. Yoo Jae-suk puts Yang Se-chan in last place. Haha agrees.

Song Ji-hyo says she put herself in first, and Jeon So-min at second. Haha tries to start a rivalry between the two asking Song Ji-hyo, “She really can’t beat you?” Song Ji-hyo just shrugs like, “Well it’s the truth, what am I supposed to do about it.” LOL. She says Yoo Jae-suk and Yang Se-chan are tied for last. Yang Se-chan is sad because he’s crushing on Ji-hyo

Jeon So-min puts Yoo Jae-suk in last place for her personal rankings.

Haha puts Song Ji-hyo first. He says Jeon So-min and himself are tied for second. the rest are all whatever. Yoo Jae-suk says he’s good looking. grabs random guys with glasses and say they all look like Yoo Jae-suk.

Q4: If everyone dies and only the Running Man cast members are left, you would date someone here.

Everyone says yes except Yoo Jae-suk and Ji Suk-jin. That means Yang Se-chan and Yoo Jae-suk gets pulled in, plus Ji Suk-jin who accidentally falls in. It’s a punishment this time and they get wigs and makeup put on them.

Yoo Jae-suk says he wouldn’t date anyone there because they’re like his little sisters. Also, Song Ji-hyo and Jeon So-min are just not his style.

Yang Se-chan of course wants to date Song Ji-hyo because she’s so attractive.

The quiz continues, but we don’t get to see the rest of it. The final score is

After this round, they get a chance to get rid of one more briefcase. Jeon So-min chooses #2which contains the travel with a partner card. That’s good that it got eliminated.

Last Game: Dangerous Roomming Together

For the final game, there is a mat with four pieces labeled #1-4. The cast will be divided into two groups. One group will stand on whichever number they want, while each person from the second group will blindly pick a number. That person will then have to add his or her score will the scores of whoever is standing there and the one with the lowest score is the final loser. Everyone wants to avoid Yoo Jae-suk and Yang Se-hyung who are currently at -2.

First up is Yoo Jae-suk, Ji Suk-jin, Jeon So-min, and Lee Kwang-soo.

Lee Kwang-soo pick spot #2. It’s Lee Kwang-soo + Haha = -1 + 1 = 0

Jeon So-min goes with spot #3. Jeon So-min + Kim Jong-kook = 1 + -1 = 0

Yoo Jae-suk goes with spot #1. Yoo Jae-suk + Yang Se-chan = -2 + -2 = -4

Ji Suk-jin chooses spot #4. Ji Suk-jin + Song Ji-hyo = 1 + 0 = 1

Now for the other team.

Haha goes with spot #2. Haha + Jeon So-min = 1 + -1 = 0

Song Ji-hyo gets #1. Song Ji-hyo + Ji Suk-jin = 0 + 1 = 1

Yang Se-chan chooses #3. Yang Se-chan + Yoo Jae-suk + Haha = -2 +-2 +-1 = -5

Kim Jong-kook choose #4. Kim Jong-kook = 1

For being in last place, Yang Se-chan gets to choose the final briefcase to decide how many people get loser stickers. Since this his first day on the show, he picks briefcase #1 for the final choice which contains the travel with a partner card which means two people get stickers today. What terrible luck!

Now Yang Se-chan has to choose one person to go on a trip with. All the cast members turn their backs and decides to rip off one person’s nametag to decide. He chooses Haha who chases him up the stairs while everyone else applauses, happy to not have gotten pick.

Yang Se-chang and Haha each get a punishment sticker.

The games were a bit draggy, but overall, I really liked this episode. I’m glad the PDs recruited people who were young and fresh, but at the same time not too young because there would be too much of an age gap. Both Jeon So-min and Yang Se-chan were active and vocal which is good. The only thing I’m worried about is that once they show starts having guests again, there are going to be way too many people on the show.

Next Week: Travelling abroad in groups of three featuring Jang Do-yeon.

  1. Anonymous

I think this is one of the better episodes of late. With no guests, that means we got to see a lot more member interactions. I’m liking the two new members too.

  2. Shazza

Does this mean they’re coming to New Zealand? Hope they do!!

I’ve already seen news reports, as they were one of the top stories a week ago, but I don’t want to give away spoilers too soon. If you can’t wait, google “Running Man three countries” and you can find out which countries they actually ended up filming at. 🙂
