Running Man Recap: Episode 347

Episode 347: Running Mate Global Project Part Two: April 23, 2017

Opening: Dangerous Goddess

It’s 4 AM. Everyone’s standing outside the Paradise Hotel and Resort for today’s opening, although none of them are too happy about it.

The PD had told them all to bring their passports because he needed them for some paperwork, but the Running Man cast members are suspicious. The hotel is right by Incheon Airport . . . so that means they’re going on a trip right? The PD just smirks like, “What a coinkidink~” Last week, the crew started a new round of missions called the Running Man Global Project – Dangerous Mission where the crew will play three rounds of missions. Those who accrue three stickers will then have to go on a scary tourist attraction. Last week, Yang Se-chan and Haha both got stickers for being in last place.

The PD then casually mentions that one of them also texted him another good candidate for the dangerous tourist attractions. It’s the Top Thrill Dragster in Ohio, USA which is a ride where you fall straight down 130 meters.

Everyone wants to know who sent such a thing. Why are you adding oil to the fire?!?! They all deny it except for Song Ji-hyo who’s suspiciously quiet. Of course it was fearless Ji-hyo, and this leads to one of the funniest exchanges of the episode. Lee Kwang-soo angrily yells out they should send Song Ji-hyo to Africa to have an insect experience. Song Ji-hyo fights back, recommending Lee Kwang-soo for the Top Thrill Dragster. Kwang-soo then yells she should be forced to eat the insects. Song Ji-hyo then says Kwang-soo should be forced to ride without a seat belt. Lee Kwang-soo gasps, “Doesn’t that mean I’ll die?” Song Ji-hyo responds, “Well insects mean death for me.” Puhahaha.

The PD then notifies them that today’s race will be in three teams of three . . . but wait there are only eight of them . . . the PD then reveals that here will be a beautiful female guest today.

Today’s Guest: ???

It’s now 4:45. The cast members go inside the hotel where they see that conveyor belt thing from last week, but this time there are two rows. The beautiful woman is waiting in the room to the left of the conveyor belt, and on the right, is a punishment room.

Here, the Running Man crew will each have to write down a category they are number one in. The female guest will then pick a few categories randomly and rank the eight cast members according to that criteria. The ones who get first place will get a gold badge which they will be able to use in today’s race, while the ones who get last will be sent to the punishment room along with the three other people sitting in the same row as him/her.

The cast members each write down

  • Lee Kwang-soo  – the person whose lips you want to steal
  • JeonSo-min – the cast member with the lowest income
  • Kim Jong-kook – the one you want to go to the jungle with
  • Song Ji-ho – the one with the worst temper
  • Yoo Jae-suk – the one you think won’t get angry
  • Ji Suk-jin – the one who looks best in glasses
  • Yang Se-chan – the one you think has the deepest belly button
  • Haha – the one who looks most luxurious

For the first round, the female guest goes with the the person whose lips you want to steal. Everyone then has to sit according to their own consensus on the rank.

The female guest picks

  1. Song Ji-hyo
  2. Jeon So-min
  3. Haha
  4. Yoo Jae-suk
  5. Kim Jong-kook
  6. Ji Suk-jin
  7. Yang Se-hyung
  8. Lee Kwang-soo

Lee Kwang-soo and the others (Ji Suk-jin, Yoo Jae-suk, and Haha) are all sent to the punishment room where they get floral hats and mustaches painted on them.

The female guest then ranks the cast member with the lowest income. She says she just guessed according to their image because she doesn’t know their actual salaries. Starting with the poorest she guesses,

  1. Ji Suk-jin
  2. ?
  3. ?
  4. ?
  5. ?
  6. ?
  7. ?
  8. Yoo Jae-suk

Yoo Jae-suk cheers when he hears he’s seemingly the richest, but then quickly realizes it’s a bad thing because he gets pulled into the punishment room for getting last place. He along with Song Ji-hyo, Kim Jong-kook, and Haha get massages by the infamous sports masseuse Kim Hyung-joon.

The next question is the one with the worst temper. She surprisingly picks Kim Jong-kook for last place which means that she thinks he doesn’t lose his temper. Kim Jong-kook, Ji-hyo, Haha, and Kwang-soo are punished by getting idiot skulls put on them.

It’s time for the guest to reveal herself. Yang Se-chan is pretty sure it’s his good buddy Jang Do-yeon and of course he’s right.

The three women will be today’s team captains.

You Are My Shinderella (Shin = shoe in Korean)

It’s now 5:29 AM, and the crew moves to the foyer for the next mission.

The men will be choosing which team they want to be on. There are six glass shoes hidden on the 11th floor of the hotel with the name of one of the captains on the bottom. The men will have ten minutes to find the shoes of whichever team captain they want.

Meanwhile, the three women will be peeling pumpkin seeds. The one to peel the most will get an advantage later.

It’s 6:00 AM when the men finally start searching for the shoes.

We get a few pans through the luxurious hotel rooms, because of course product placement, but at least they’re finding a way to pay the bills. Yoo Jae-suk finds Jeon So-min’s glass slipper in a fridge. Lee Kwang-soo finds one under the sink.

In the foyer, the women are busy peeling pumpkin seeds. The PD then asks them who they don’t want to be on a team with.

Song Ji-hyo doesn’t want to be with Ji Suk-jin because he’s a liability. Jang Do-yeon agrees saying he already looks tired after just the opening. Jeon So-min doesn’t want to be with Lee Kwang-soo because she’s always with him, and he makes her nervous because she don’t know when he’ll betrayer her.

Time’s up.

The teams based on the shoe hunt are

The PD then announces that the pumpkin peeling didn’t matter. Actually, the real mission was to see how much the women talked behind everyone’s back because in Korean, peeling pumpkin seeds are a euphemism for talking behind one’s back.

The PD says Jang Do-yeon talked about others two times, and agreed with other people’s comments one time.

Jeon So-min talked about others seven times. She said she didn’t want to be on a team with Yoo Jae-suk and Ji Seok-jin because then she’d have to take care of them three meals a day. She also said that Haha is surprisingly difficult to approach and uncomfortable because she doesn’t understand him. When she first met him she was shocked at how unfriendly he was. Haha yells out, “I just didn’t want you to get the wrong idea. I didn’t want to make you uncomfortable!!! Fine then! I’ll show you what it really means to be friendly!”

Song Ji-ho talked about others six times and agreed with other people’s comments five times meaning that she “peeled the most pumpkin seeds.” since Song Ji-hyo won, she’ll get a special advantage later, but we don’t know what it is just yet.

It’s now 6:17 AM, and the sun is up. Everyone goes to get dressed into team uniforms. Jeon So-min looks at the pink ones and wants it for herself exclaiming, “Are you discriminating against our team because we’re too old?!?”

The PD then brings out a life size board for Running Marble which is a play on the game Blue Marble. (Blue Marble = Korean version of Monopoly). On the board, there are various locations like Busan, Sydney, Tokyo, Seoul, New York, Taipei, Hong Kong, Osaka, Jeju Island, Athens, Copenhagen, etc.

The female team captains get to throw the dice first. After going around the board one full time, Jang Do-yeon lands on Jeju Island, Song Ji-hyo gets Taipei, and Jeon So-min gets Osaka.

The PD then tells them that they will actually be going to those cities that they landed on. What? Right now? There are people from the production team at the airport right now getting tickets as they speak.

Ji Suk-jin complains he has a live radio show tomorrow. He can’t go on an international trip.

The PD just continues on that they need to leave right now and tells them to choose a backpack from the row of rainbow backpacks behind them. At their destinations, they will be buying a present for the cast member with the name in the backpack, so they have to choose wisely. The PD emphasizes that  the backpacks are really important.

Jeon so-min is so excited to choose a pretty colored back pack that she gets runs and knocks over all over the Running Marble pieces.

Then it’s a rush to the airport as the cast hurriedly meet up with their stylists and managers to prepare for a trip.

At the airport, Yang Se-chan is still in denial, and keeps saying they won’t know until they actually board the plane. He thinks the PD is just pranking them.  Song Ji-hyo just cuts him off, “No Se-chan, it’s over!” Yang Se-chan is worried he’ll be fired from “Comedy Big League.” Maybe he has a meeting or something?

At the ticketing counter, they find out that they’re flying business class and Jeon So-min gasps saying this is her first time. She wonders if the food is different. Her eyes glance sideways and then she asks if they can have beer. Then on the plane, Jeon So-min is a never ending talk box, even blabbering about who she cried a lot when she was as a baby.

The Osaka team arrives at Kansai Airport at 11:20 AM. It’s colder there than it is in Korea.

The Taipei team arrives at 11:40 AM.

The Jeju Island team arrives at 10:30 AM which makes sense they arrive first because there are a lot of flights from Seoul to Jeju.

At the sites, the PD reminds then that they have to buy a present here and there will be another mission. If they fail to complete it before the return ticket or can’t return to Korea on time, they will get another sticker. As we found out last week, everyone who gets a total of three stickers will have to go on one of those scary tourist attractions.

The PD then brings out a bingo card to decide what their mission will be. The team captain will throw her shoe and they’ll do whatever the shoe lands on. There are three options that are repeated three time each.

  • Get a trendy haircut at a local hair salon
  • Go to a bath house owned by a Mr. Suzuki (the second most common surname in Japan)
  • Do some cosplaying and take a photo with a group of cosplayers

Captain Jeon So-min throws her shoe but keeps missing the mark. She has to attempt it more than ten times until it finally lands on “Go to a bath house owned by a Mr. Suzuki.” Apparently, Sato and Suzuki and the most common Japanese surnames. The PD reminds the cast members that they have to find it themselves, they don’t have an bath houses pre-scouted for them. Uh oh.

The mission is different for each team. For the Taipei team, each of the three teammates will throw a shoe at a board with Taipei’s top 9 foods, and they have to eat all the items their shoes land on before their return flight home.

They get five foods stinky tofu, mango shaved ice, beef noodles, pineapple cakes, and danzai noodles.

Meanwhile, the Jeju team has a bingo chart with the words “ocean,” “UNESCO,” and “experience” written on it three times each. Team Captain Jang Do-yeon throws her shoe and it lands on “ocean” which means they have to put on haenyeo outfits and catch octopus to have octopus ramen. Haenyeo are female divers which is a traditional job local to Jeju Island. The cast then asks what “UNESCO,” and “experience.” The PD reveals it’s the exact same thing. LOL.

Osaka: Yoo Jae-suk, Ji Suk-jin, Jeon So-min

The Osaka team’s return ticket is at 5:50 PM, but they need to return to the airport by 4 PM in order to get on the flight on time. That’s not a lot of time. They take a cab and head for the downtown area, and practice some Japanese in the cab while using their phones.

Jeon So-min suddenly notices how close the cameras in the car are, and tries to hide her head behind Yoo Jae-suk. He looks at her like she’s crazy, and pushes her away. She then tries block to block the camera lens with her hand.

The three decide to have some lunch first. They arrive at Dotombori where Jeon So-min promptly proceeds to skip around and romantically peer over the river. Yoo jae-suk comments she’s a strange one. Ji Suk-jin gets his one funny scene of the episode when he walks down the stairs without looking, and walks right into a post.

Yoo Jae-suk, Ji Suk-jin, and Jeon So-min snack on some takoyaki. Suk-jin has to pay because he loses a round of rocks-paper-scissors.

While eating the snack, Jeon So-min disappears. She’s gone off by herself to ask people for the a bath house owned by a Mr. Suzuki. After wasting precious time looking for her, the three then check out a ramen shop where they order at a machine. Yoo Jae-suk has to pay because this time he loses rocks paper scissors. Lucky Jeon So-min has gotten everything for free so far.

They have some trouble figuring out where to put the bills in because the instructions are in Japanese. The food comes out. The ramen looks very delicious. Yoo Jae-suk even get some rice to mix with the leftover soup.

Taipei: Haha, Song Ji-hyo, Yang Se-chan

Haha, Song Ji-hyo, and Yang Se-chan arrive at the downtown area by taxi.

Haha likes the crosswalk signal because it’s animated and kind of looks like the Running Man logo. There’s lots of street foods here. They walk around and see Danzai Noodles on a menu and go inside the restaurant. Haha uses his poor English skills to order.

While waiting for their food to come out, Song Ji-hyo decides to video call Ji Suk-jin. Jeon So-min is jealous that they get to eat for their mission. While Song Ji-hyo can’t understand how the PDs could have come up with such a ridiculous joke of a mission for the other team.

The noodles are brought out. Song Ji-hyo pats Yang Se-chan on the back for finding the delicious place. Haha calls the noodles crazy good.

Jeju Island: Kim Jong-kook, Lee Kwang-soo, Jang Do-yeon

Meanwhile, it’s a stormy day in Jeju. Kim Jong-kook, Lee Kwang-soo, and Jang Do-yeon all put on raincoats, but they’re cheap, flimsy ones that practically blow away in the wind.

The PDs introduce four actual haenyeos. It’s four grandmas. Because the job of a haenyeo is dying out. only old people are haenyeos these days. Kim Jong-kook asks if they actually go in the water when it’s this stormy. One of the haeneyeo’s replies, “We don’t!” The PD then tells them that there’s a change of plans, it’s too dangerous for them to go in the water right now. The three pretend they’re disappointed about not being able to dive in the water today. lucky lucky.

The new mission is for one of them to put on a traditional haenyeo outfit and buy some octopus ramen to eat at a restaurant. They have the haenyeos vote who should do it. They pick Lee Kwang-soo as the one who’d best fit the outfit because he’s tall and skinny like a model. LOL.

Meanwhile, in Osaka, Yoo Jae-suk, Ji Suk-jin, and Jeon So-min ask about Mr. Suzuki’s bath house. Everyone points to various bath houses nearby, but they just don’t know if it’s owned by a Mr. Suzuki. They ask a bunch of people in broken Japanese until finally they come across someone who offers to search on his phone. They take a cab there. Jeon So-min of course shows off her pixie antics on the way there. Yoo Jae-suk and Ji Suk-jin ask her to act out a break up scene because after all she is an actress. She starts crying rights away.

They finally arrive at the bath the the owner confirms that his surname is Suzuki. It opens at 3:30 PM, so the owner lets them in early and film before it actually opens. It’s a quaint little place inside.

In Taipei, the gang has cleared the first food, and they go on the prowl for some stinky tofu. Hah tries over and over to say stinky tofu in Chinese, but can’t get the pronunciation right. Song Ji-hyo and Yang Se-chan aren’t much better. Chinese is really hard. They ask the fans following them but can’t figure out what they’re saying. Finally, they see some tofu in a shop window, but they’re tofu skewers and not stinky tofu. They keep searching and find a restaurant that serves it.

Once they get inside, the PD gives them a chance card because Song Ji-hyo won the mini-game with the pumpkin seeds. The card says they can do ??? to one of the other teams. The card is blurred out. The PD then asks which team they’d like to use it on. They pick Osaka. Ominous music plays.

Back to Osaka.

Yoo Jae-suk, Ji Suk-jin, and Jeon So-min walk out of the bath house. Jeon So-min’s face is complete rid of makeup. I guess she really did bathe in there. She and Song Ji-hyo are going to overlap in characters for actresses who don’t care about looking pretty.

I once saw Jeon So-min in person back when she was filming the soap opera, “Aurora Princess.” I was driving late at near just outside of Seoul, and she was filming a car scene. She’s super pretty in real life and has really good skin too.

As they exclaim how happy they are to have completed their mission, the PD tells them good job, BUT Song Ji-hyo used her chance card on team which means ???

I really liked Jeon So-min this episode. She’s not afraid to be loud which is important for a variety show. However, it did seem like she got waaaay too much air time. I would have liked to see more of Jang Do-yeon. Her parts probably got edited out because of the poor weather, but if we got to see scene after scene of Jeon So-min making banter in the plane and taxi, I’m sure the PDs could have given us the same for Jang Do-yeon.

On the other hand, Yang Se-chan didn’t really stand out this episode, but we’ll have to see if that’s just an issue with the editing.

Overall, I’m really excited about the new cast members and this current “Dangerous Mission.” One of my big complaints with Running Man is that the episodes always seemed so rushed because the arcs were always just one and done, but with the new time slot giving Running Man an increase to two hours of air time and the multi-episode arcs, I’m really happy with the new direction, and it seems like this weeks episode had a slight bump in ratings too!

Next Week: We find out what Song Ji-hyo’s chance card was.
