Weekly Idol Recap: Episode 289
Episode 289 – NCT 127 & Big Bang – February 8, 2017
Defconn and Jeong Hyeong-don mention that they’ve been getting a lot of big stars on the show lately. There was Big Bang on episodes 284-285 and Shinhwa on episodes 286-287. They joke that unfortunately though, they’re going back to little fish this week. The first half of this episode features NCT 127 and the second half is a compilation of previously unaired bonus clips of Big Bang.
Idol of the Week
Defconn notes that NCT was on <Weekly Idol> before, back when Jeong Hyeong-don was on a break. There were five group members back then, but they’ve increased since. Defconn jokes that they’re going to keep increasing until they get to 127 members.
NCT 127 says their introduction, “To the world, this is NCT~” Defconn and Jeong Hyeong-don are like, “Huh?” So Johnny repeats their introduction slowly. They’re impressed by his English pronunciation. He explains that he’s from Chicago. Defconn and Jeong Hyeong-don then ask what NCT stands for and Jaehyun replies that it’s Neo Culture Technology. They’re impressed by his English pronunciation too and wonder if he grew up abroad. Nope. He’s from Seoul, but just studied English diligently in school. Jaehyun also explains that 127 represents the longitude of Seoul since NCT 127 is the unit that is based in the capital.
Defconn and Jeong Hyeong-don then try to figure out which of the nine NCT 127 members were previously on <Weekly Idol>. Defconn is super confused. Especially because Haechan tries to explain the difference between NCT U, NCT 127, and NCT Dream, but has a lisp so it’s hard for them to understand him.
Eventually, he just has the five group members raise their hands. Winwin, Taeyoung, Jaehyun, Yuta, and Taeil were on the show before.
For those confused, the units and group members are
- Taeil, Taeyong, Jaehyun, Doyoung, Ten
- Chenle, Renjun, Jaemin, Jisung, Jeno, Mark, Haechan
- Taeil, Taeyong, Jaehyun, Mark, Yuta, Winwin, Haechan, Doyoung, Johnny
Defconn and Jeong Hyeong-don then ask each group member what they’re in charge of.
Johnny says he’s in charge of relaxing/composure. He says it’s because he’s been in Korea for 5 years, although I don’t really understand what that has to do with relaxing/composure. Johnny’s father owns a business and Jeong Hyeong-don asks if he has a swimming pool. He doesn’t. Jeong Hyeong-don asks, “Then don’t you have to work hurry hurry?” LOL. Jeong Hyeong-don keeps asking if he has a “pool.” Johnny replies, “Ppul? (Grass), yes there’s a lot of grass.”
Johnny says he walks slowly as well and is in charge of balance too. Jaehyun says Johnny was up at 5 am drinking an Americano and slowly woke him up. Defconn says, “5 AM? That’s not relaxed, that’s pretty fast. Even my Dad gets up at 5:30 AM.”
Doyoung says he’s in charge of influence. Jeong Hyeong-don asks him to choose the three group members he’d recommend for <Weekly Idol>. Doyoung chooses
- Mark for good his good reactions
- Haechan for being good at joking around
Jeong Hyeong-don gives Winwin a hand shake and tells the rest to leave. There are too many of them. They’ll just use those three. 😐
Defconn and Jeong Hyeong-don then ask about their new song, “Limitless.” Mark explains that its, “Urban R&B, dancing . . .” Defconn and Jeong Hyeong-don are like, “Huh?” again with the English. Jaehyun intercepts and says it refers to “their limitless talents. This is the start of NCT.” The leader Taeyong says, “I don’t have anything to add except that it’s a good song.”
Over the Sunbaenim
There are lots of big names in SM, and in this segment, they have to try to surpass their label sunbaes (seniors.) The first battle is Over the EXO. There were on episode 103 back on July 10, 2013. They showed off a lot of their personal talents such as an imitation of Shinee Jonghyun and various kicks.
Defconn and Jeong Hyeong-don ask NCT 127 to show off their personal talents. Johnny starts off by imitating his friend’s parrot. He does a two way conversation between him whistling and the parrot imitating him. It’s basically him just talking and then doing a terrible imitation of him talking. Ding! He keeps trying to make the parrot thing happen though. It’s not going to happen Johnny.
Next is Haechan who imitates someone eating hot ramen. *Slurp cough cough* Uh . . . I don’t know what to make of this. Jeong Hyeong-don says, “It’s pretty bad, but honestly, this is better than the parrot.”
Haechan does an imitation of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal.” The poor guy has a lisp, so it sounds nothing like Michael Jackson.
Winwin does some tumbling. He’s pretty decent. Defconn asks if he can do it in place. Winwin, “I don’t want to get hurt.” Jeong Hyeong-don asks for five spins. Winwin replies, “Um. No, I can’t do that.” He’s scared he’ll get injured. He says he’s flexible though because of his background in Chinese dance. He looks pretty flexible as he tries to bend down and touch his toes, but then everyone notices that he was bending his knees. Jeong Hyeong-don asks him to bend over more. Winwin says, “No, it hurts.” Next, they make him do some yoga, but he can only hold the pose for a couple seconds. Okay, so he’s just relatively flexible.
Yuta does some weird thing where he sucks in his nostrils, and holds them in place. Everyone else tries, and it’s actually quite difficult. He looks like an angry bird. +1 for personal talent.
With just one acceptable personal talent, it looks like they didn’t manage to surpass EXO.
Doyoung is like, “Wait! Can we do singing as a personal talent? We practiced singing a lot.”
Jae-hyun, Taeil (guitar) and Doyoung sing Sam Smith’s “Lay Me Down” and Maroon 5 ‘s “Sunday Morning.” They mess up the harmony on the last part. Defconn lets them do a do-over. Somethings not right again. Taeil points and tattles on Doyoung. This time just Jae-hyun and Taeil sing the last bit of the song. They sound good. They try it a fourth time with Doyoung again. It’s bad again. It was Doyoung’s fault. Doyoung slaps himself in the face. Aw.
The next part is Over the Girl’s Generation. They guested on episode 213 back on August 26, 2015. Girl’s Generation had worm gummies placed on their forehead and tried to get it in their mouths without using their hands. Their best time was 28 seconds.
Since there are so many people, NCT 127 tries three people try at a time. The first group is Johnny, Haechan, and Mark. Mark gets it in 6 seconds. Wow! He has a super long tongue and everyone is shocked at how good he is.
The second group is Winwin, Taeyong, and Yuta. Winwin and Yuta get their worms at the same time which is after 16 seconds.
The third group is Jaehyun, Taeil, and Doyoung. Taeil manages to eat his worm.
Defconn and Jeong Hyeong-don scold NCT 127 because the whole point of this segment was to make funny facial features, but they tried too hard and just ate the worm gummies as fast as possible. They finished too early, so there’s nothing else to fill up the time. Jeong Hyeong-don says he’ll have the writers come up with another game.
x2 Speed Dance Challenge
Since they have some time left to fill, they do the two times speed dance to their new song “Limitless.” Luckily, since it’s new, the choreography must be fresh on their minds. The choreography is really difficult though since there are lots of big formations changes.
They do a decent job, but they’re pretty tired at the end.
Leader Taeyong ends the segment by saying, “With our additional members, we were able to show a new side of NCT on Weekly Idol. Today was a lot of fun, and we’ll try to come back with a more improved version of us. Please give us limitless love, limitless expectations, and lots of attention.”
Big Bang’s Previously Unaired Footage
G-Dragon’s personal talents are
- Jo Yong-pil imitation (better than Taeyang)
- Sarang Chu’s “Kkang Kkang chong” Dance
- Best at turning (learned ballet at five years old)
After GD says he doesn’t know Jo Yong-pil’s number, Defconn and Jeong Hyeong-don ask everyone to namedrop some famous celebrities they’re close friends with.
T.O.P. is close with actors Jung Woo-sung Lee Jeong-jae. He calls them hyung. Jeong Hyeong-don notes that T.O.P. calls him hyung too. T.O.P. says, “Yeah, but the class of hyung is different.” Burn!
Seungri says he’s friends with the owner of Valencia CF. He hangs out with his kids.
G-Dragon says he’s close with Jeong Hyeong-don. Aw. GD says he called him a while ago, but it was a non-existing number. Jeong Hyeong-don replies, “Well, celebrities shouldn’t give out their numbers easily.” Pft!
They do a playoff to see who G-Dragon is closest with. They ask him who he would save from a deserted island if he could only choose one person between Jeong Hyeong-don and Karl Lagerfeld. GD says he’s not actually that close with Karl Lagerfeld, so of course he chooses Doni. Round two is Jeong Hyeong-don or Justin Beiber. GD picks Jeong Hyeong-don. Round three is Jeong Hyeong-don or Pharrell Williams. He chooses Pharrell Williams since they’re closer. No! My ship!
Defconn and Jeong Hyeong-don then offer personalized drinks.
- GD – ice Americano
- T.O.P. – ice Americano + and extra shot
- Tae yang – ice chocolate
- Daesung – grapefruit juice
- Seungri – plum flavor Coolpis (LOL! Coolpis is a super cheap Korean drink. A good comparison is Arizona’s 99 cent drinks.)
Taeyang once said that GD had the “cheapest mouth” meaning that he’s bad at keeping secrets and is just worth 10 won (~ 0.1 USD). Taeyang now says it went up a bit in price to 50 won since he’s older and more mature now. T.O.P. says he once got really mad at him because he’s sensitive about when people talk about his personal issues. GD says that’s he only talked about things that are nothing. T.O.P. is like, “It’s not nothing!” GD once caused a problem with someone who T.O.P liked because of his loose mouth. Seungri adds that even when he’s on a break, he hears his name on broadcasts because of GD. He has no complaints though since GD’s entertaining. Of course, Seungri wouldn’t mind people talking about him. He loves the attention.
G-Dragon’s profile also said that he can’t smash garlic. A writer brings out some garlic, a cutting board, and a knife. He does it pretty easily. GD says he used to not be able to do it, but he’s figured it out since. Jeong Hyeong-don jokes that main writer needs to make some kimchi, so GD continues to smash garlic. He puts on some gloves since the garlic is spicy.
It’s time for T.O.P.’s profile.
His personal talent is that he can spin three hula hoops with his neck.
GD continues to diligently smash garlic cloves. Jeong Hyeong-don yells at him to stop since he’s making everyone’s eyes water. Jeong Hyeong-don, “The main writer lives alone, so she doesn’t need that much garlic!”
T.O.P. says he did the hula hoop thing it at a fan meeting for one minute. He’s good at first, but then it gets caught on his neck, and he looks silly as he gets hit in the face with three hula hoops. T.O.P makes it through three spins.
His profile also says that he’s the “God of dance, King of dance, TOP Dance.” It’s supposed to be sarcastic though because he forgets choreography often, and he just stands still on stage whenever he does.
Side note: Seungri was in charge of dance, but he’s lost all his skills. He says he stopped trying after seeing Taeyang dance skills since he can’t beat him anyways.
Seungri dances to some random club music doing random big movements. Seungri tries to redeem himself saying out of the blue that he listens to most diverse music. Jeong Hyeong-don sarcastically congratulations him. “You win!”
Taeyang is in a a middle school textbook under “Careers and Jobs” for his quote, “Shoot for the biggest and highest dream you can think of because dreaming is equal opportunities for all.”
There are actually quotes from each Big Bang member in the textbook. GD’s was “You have to be able to let go of things that you can’t achieve. There is nothing as lingering in this world as lingering attachments.”
Seungri is like, “Why don’t you rap that quote for us?” GD replies coolly, “You seem quite greedy (for airtime) today.”
Seungri’s quote is “Dreams won’t betray you if you do your best to achieve them.”
Jeong Hyeong-don asks, “Then why did you quit your dance dream so easily?”Seungri replies, “That’s because I listened to G-Dragon’s quote.” Haha.
T.O.P.’s quote is, “Facing your fears for a dear hope is the definition of ‘courage.'”
He says his fears these days come from thinking too much especially about family and his fellow group members.
Daesung’s quote is, “Miracles happen when you start to dream. Positivity is my compass and my motivation.”
Daesung’s profile says under personal talents
- Making drum sounds with his mouth
- Rotation whirlpool
On an online broadcast, he showed viewers how to protect themselves if a bad person approaches them late at night. Daesung just starts spinning around round and round with his fist out. LOL.
Defconn notes, “You have to use this 50 meters from your home. If you’re 2 km away, it’ll be too dizzy.” Daesung responds to just run home and then start doing the whirlpool once you get close to your house.
Seungri’s profile says his personal talents are
- Doing drunk Big Bang member imitations
- Breakdown twerking
Seungri says Daesung becomes quiet and smiles a lot while swinging side to side when drunk. Seungri does an impersonation. GD does the same impersonation. GD says that Daesang just smiles and shakes by himself, doesn’t even try to talk to women. Daesung says he often drinks wine alone at home, so he does that while listening to music and looking at his reflection in the window.
Seungri says Taeyang doesn’t get drunk. Taeyang doesn’t know his limit because he hasn’t been that drunk before. Seungri says T.O.P. just apologizes when he’s drunk. He gets on his knees and keeps saying, “I’m sorry Seungri.” T.O.P. adds that he cries a lot when drunk.
Seungri calls GD a “superstar” when he’s drunk because he snaps his fingers at Seungri to get him some food. Aw. Poor maknae.
GD gets his revenge by saying Seungri just starts dancing crazy when drunk. T.O.P. says Seungri likes to watch others being drunk.
This episode ends with a caption that reads, “We put out the very last bit of remaining footage in honor of Mr. Choi Seung-hyun’s upcoming enlistment. We’ll be waiting the next 21 months in the B3.”
This is my first time recapping <Weekly Idol>, so it’s a bit messy. I haven’t watched this show in years, but I realized that it’s more fun than I thought it was, so I’ll continue recapping this show, and hopefully my recaps of this show will get better over time.
